One bride comments on her experience designing a completely custom dress with Marilyn: "I found Marilyn to be very receptive. She listened to what I wanted and helped me figure out how it could be accomplished. When I didn't like something, there was no exasperation—just alternatives. I thought she was creative in her approaches to how things could be accomplished, and clearly very knowledgeable. They understood what I wanted and did all they could to make it happen. I was extremely pleased not only with the process, but also the final product."

Reviews

"Marilyn and her team are very sincere. They won't rush you out the door just to get the next client in. They do their best to give you exactly what you want. They want you to have the dress that you dreamed of without breaking the bank."

"The designers were fantastic; true visionaries. They listened to my needs and then made it happen."

"Marilyn and her team are very meticulous and would double and triple check the changes they would make to my dress before pinning it for alterations."

"They worked very well with me and how I wanted to be modest on my wedding day. They were understanding and listened attentively when I spoke. They were honest about what they thought would look best and helped me design the perfect jacket for my dress."

"Marilyn's prices were very reasonable and within my budget. I had originally been quoted for alterations at a big chain bridal salon, and Marilyn easily beat their prices by almost half. Not only does she and her team do great work, but I also appreciated the one-on-one attention I got while in their studio."

"I really enjoyed the transparency of the process, Marilyn helped me understand where costs were coming from and how to adjust the alterations to meet the budget."

"Marilyn provided alterations and design for my daughter's wedding gown and updated a veil from my 1980's hat with veil. There were holes from moths in the veil and she and her staff came up with wonderful solutions to make it complete and beautiful."

"I thought the services were fantastic. I really liked Marilyn. She had the perfect temperament -- incredibly confident in her skills and realistic about what could and could not be done. She would listen to what I wanted, look at the dress, and say either 'Yes, and here's how I'm going to do it.' or 'No, here is why, and here's what I suggest instead.' It was really valuable for me because I had no idea about any of this stuff."

"I was also ecstatic they were willing to design and make this crazy high collar shawl I wanted. It was a work of art."

"She clearly loves what she does, as do the girls that work there."

Questions and Answers

What 3 words best describe your work?
I think the 3 words would be: Elegant. Subtle. Eclectic.
Why should someone hire you?
My studio has years of experience in creating custom gowns, restoring or redesigning vintage gowns, and performing complex alterations. I take the time to explain each step of the creation or alteration process so the Bride/BM/MOB/MOG/Groom/Groomsmen understand what can and can't be done—and why. I also give instructions to each about how to move in the gown, encourage an entourage for the final fitting to go over bustle instructions, and provide any other advice or encouragement needed.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
I have a motto here at my Studio that applies to everything we do: "Countless unseen details are often the only difference between the mundane and the magnificent.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Sometimes in spite of the most careful planning and best intentions, something will go "wrong." Whatever it is, either no one but you will notice it or it will be the fond memory of your wedding for your guests. Enjoy the day, the family and friends who have come to celebrate with you and make wonderful memories to last a lifetime; that's what it's all about.
What are some common misconceptions about your services?
The most common misconception is the level of skill required to create or alter a gown.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
I think if I wasn't designing and sewing and creating I would be an archeologist specializing in textiles and the history of clothing. I would love to "discover" the woman (it had to be a woman) who created the first sewing needle! And then the first loom!
