Questions and Answers
What 3 words best describe your work?
Enchanting, vibrant, alive.
What's your favorite quote?
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do, with your one wild and precious life?"—Mary Oliver. We love this quote because it's a reminder to live life to its fullest, to take nothing for granted. Our photography style descriptors—especially "vibrant" and "alive"—really harken to this philosophy. The photos we shoot are not just about a wedding day—they're a celebration of life and love, of friendship and family.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
Invisibility! Clients already describe us as very "ninja" and unobtrusive during the wedding day, and it's true—we make a very conscious effort to blend in even while striving to get "the shot." But if we could straight up be invisible, we could probably capture so many more amazing moments that our wedding albums would have to be split into multiple volumes!
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
We once walked into a reception hall that had almost no decorations, which was surprising because most of our couples put in a good amount of thought and money into their reception details. As photographers, it's so easy to make the day all about the details and the floral arrangements and the decorations. Not only are they pretty to photograph, but that's what wedding magazines and blogs and designers focus on! However, at this wedding, we were immediately struck by something else we don't always notice—a feeling of warmth and genuine friendship that emanated throughout the entire room and among all the guests. Most weddings will have some guests who are there out of obligation, but at this one, it really seemed that every single person there loved the couple and were honestly excited to be celebrating their day! This reminded us that despite the thousand other things that make up a wedding day, this is what weddings are really all about—love, friendship, and family.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Hire a wedding planner! Not only can they take the stress away, but having one can make the whole wedding planning process fun again. Wedding planners and designers have gone through the process hundreds of times, and can take you from point A to point B a whole lot quicker than if you had to do all the research yourself and figure things out from scratch!
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
The wind reminds us of freedom, open fields remind us of joy, and the sky reminds us of love. Because of that, nature plays a huge part in our imagery. Traveling the world opens our eyes to different ways of seeing things, which in turn is incorporated in our shooting. Music videos are also a source of inspiration. Just like with wedding photography, music videos are an attempt to take an emotion and convert it into a visual form that is appealing, intriguing, and tells a story.
How many people are on your team?
Junshien might be the face and name of the studio, but we also have Tony and Nate shooting as lead photographers. Christina is our studio manager, and handles most of the emails and administrative work. She's also a certified makeup artist, and many of our clients choose to go with her. We have a roster of assistant photographers, along with a video team!
