Visit Annadel Estate Winery late on a summer’s afternoon and you’ll undoubtedly experience the sublime perfume of thousands of roses pulsing on a gentle wind. It’s just one of many uncommon pleasures this private, turn-of-the-century estate has to offer.

Located in the heart of the Valley of the Moon, at the crest of a narrow country road flanked by walnut trees, Annadel occupies 40 acres of Sonoma Valley woodlands, vineyards and heirloom rose fields. A versatile venue, it easily accommodates a wide variety of functions, from weddings to corporate events.

Annadel’s main event space is the Ruin, a striking open-air stone structure, which is all that remains of the original winery that burned down in the late 1800s. With thick, hand-hewn stone walls that are over twelve feet high and trellised with vines, roses, and other flowers, the Ruin provides a timeless setting for ceremonies and dinners; it’s especially magical when burnished by the day’s last light or softly lit beneath a star-filled sky. Ancient oak trees provide shade, and a wide border of rose bushes and other flowering plants scent the air. In addition to being open to the sky, the Ruin opens on two sides to the surrounding Terrace, an excellent area for receiving guests as well as dancing the night away. Just below the Ruin and Terrace is an expansive lawn, sheltered by tall shade trees on one side and bordered by fields of blooming roses on the other.

Behind the Ruin is a rustic Barn, a unique space for a rehearsal dinner or reception. A striking heritage oak stands at the entrance, which is framed by creeping red roses; weathered white siding and olive doors give the building its stamp of authenticity. While no decoration is needed inside, many couples add some flowers to enhance the Barn’s natural warmth.

A clapboard Bridal Cottage is also included with your rental, and can be used for pre-ceremony preparations or as a quiet resting place for elderly family and guests during the festivities.

The romantic allure of Annadel is perhaps felt most strongly at night, when artful lighting can dramatically outline the Ruin walls and surrounding trees. For a few charmed hours, you’re convinced you’re in an Old World stone villa and there’s no place you’d rather be.
