Why We Like This Place
As a famous ad line once said, “Membership has its privileges,” so it’s quite exciting to find that one of San Diego’s most exclusive urban retreats, The University Club Atop Symphony Towers, will extend their VIP treatment to non-members when they host a wedding or special event here.
This super-chic, downtown penthouse exudes understated elegance, not to mention jaw-dropping, panoramic views of the entire city. Originally founded in 1909 to promote education, literature and art, the club now counts many of San Diego’s elite business and cultural luminaries among its members. But toss out any preconceived images you might have of stuffy rooms and a stodgy atmosphere, because with its recent expansion and renovation, this 34th-floor aerie is au courant and stunning.
The elevator whisks you to the white-marble entry where a receptionist greets you. Straight ahead is the expansive main section, where dark ceramic floors and a striking color palette of crisp white and black get a vibrant pop with splashes of lime green on high backed sofas and modern club chairs. Huge floor-to-ceiling picture windows frame the spectacular vistas that showcase San Diego Bay (including the Embarcadero, harbor and Coronado Bridge), the convention center and surrounding skyline, as well as Tijuana to the south and the hills to the east. A large alcove even provides binoculars on each of the tables so you can get a birds-eye peek of the Padres in action down at Petco Park.
Speaking of action, to your left is the Media Room, featuring a 103″ flat screen TV and an array of signed baseball bats hanging in Lucite boxes, which have been donated by an owner of the hometown team. Since the University Club likes to highlight its local connections, there are Taylor Guitars displayed on one wall and a John Bishop-designed longboard-cum-table in the hip and casual Apollo Room Lounge. Glittering chrome chandeliers spiral from the ceiling like tiered sculptures and art is everywhere, from classic oils to a changing display of mixed media pieces that you pass en route to the Laureate Ballroom.
This grand space is the hub for your private event. The rich, muted colors of the room make the sensational views of lush Balboa Park through walls of glass even more dramatic. Opulent French doors allow you to divide the ballroom and have your ceremony on one side and your reception on the other. (On Sundays, you can have use of the entire club so you might want to start by exchanging vows in the Boardroom, which looks out onto the eastern edge of the city.)
Live music is welcome—they’ve had everything from jazz piano to rock to mariachi bands and even the USC marching band. And, of course, your dining experience will be as impeccable as the venue: The chef and culinary team are used to catering to a discerning clientele, and use only the freshest ingredients, putting a contemporary spin on classic favorites.
This place is truly special, but be forewarned: The University Club opens its doors to only 16 non-member events per year. For those who love going where few have gone before, this is the perfect place—just remember to book your date early!
