Before you can go pick out your invitations, you need to decide how to word them. You have two basic choices—you can conform to the traditional rules of etiquette, or you can select more contemporary options. Either way, it can be a challenge to appropriately express yourself, so I offer some suggestions to help you wade through the ways of wording.

I am utterly shocked. The second of today’s Dear Abby questions was from a Kansas woman who had just attended quite possibly the rudest bridal shower ever. After the gifts were opened, the guests were instructed to address, stamp, and write their own thank you notes. Once the guests properly congratulated themselves on the gifts they brought, all that was left for the bride to do was sign her name to the bottom of each card.

I rarely go to weddings (maybe it’s because most of my social circle is either already married or never going to be), but a year ago a friend invited me to one.

As my friend’s date I wasn’t obligated to bring a gift, but I’d I’d been told the bride and groom liked to cook, so I got them a few of my favorite kitchen gadgets from Sur La Table as a wedding present. I put my present on a table with dozens of other gifts, and hoped that it wouldn’t get lost in the pile.

A while ago, I posted about one man’s very creative marriage proposal to his love. Jeffrey Paul created a short proposal film and played it at an Oakland theater with all of the couple’s family and friends present (not to mention a TLC camera crew!). Intent on topping even himself, this animation teacher at the Art Institute of San Francisco had his class work on his wedding invitation, too! The result is another quirky/cool animated video. They actually sent out DVDs of the video as the invite:

As one of my lovely dance teachers and mentors once said to me, “to decide to like something is to congratulate yourself.” And what better time or place to surround yourself with what you like than at your wedding reception?
