About This Company
Floral designer Dawn Hansen approaches her dazzling flower arrangements much the way a baker might tackle a favorite recipe. She assembles the basic ingredients of any wedding bouquet—hydrangeas, roses or calla lilies, for example, and when she’s satisfied with the flavor, she adds a little something unexpected. Think of it as a zesty extra flourish in the form of a tulip or a peony that turns a regular mix of blossoms into a truly surprising floral design.
This injection of fresh elements has made Dawn’s company, Lavender Hill Wedding and Event, well known for its botanical motifs. At one recent reception, the towering centerpieces consisted of clear glass vases in graduating heights with dahlias, orchids, and pincushions submerged inside. The flowers nearly swam in this underwater delight, but Dawn wasn’t done: she placed floating candles on top. It was far from ordinary. “She shines because of her creativity,” says one vendor. “It’s not just changing a color or flower from week to week, she has very clever and edgy design concepts.”
Dawn and Lavender Hill embrace the unorthodox, to be sure, but they can also go a more traditional route if that suits the bride. In fact, many of Dawn’s colleagues comment on her versatility and flexibility. “Dawn stands out because she can accommodate everyone,” says a wedding planner who has worked with her on multiple occasions. “At one celebration, she’ll be totally Zen, and at the next she’ll be completely traditional. She can also do high end or middle range—everyone I’ve sent to her has been happy.”
Having satisfied brides and grooms ranks at the top of Dawn’s list of priorities. She’s said that she plans to “bring great customer service back” and she stands by her word. Not only does she insist on lots of personal attention for each client in the form of phone calls and e-mails, she’s also willing to go beyond what’s expected. When one couple planned to wed at a yacht club where there was no arch, Dawn hand-made a stylized and artistic one out of bamboo; she then decorated it with tea leaves and bright orange lilies, according to the bride’s wishes. “Dawn considers your taste, needs, and location, but most importantly, she considers you,” says one bride.
Understanding a bride and groom’s vision for the day comes easily to Dawn, as does making beautiful blooms with a creative flare. She’s been drawn to what she calls “the big, emotional aspect” of special events like weddings, because they give her a chance to emphasize drama through her florals. “I always ask people what they want to evoke with the flowers at their ceremony,” she explains. “It’s my job to make everyone oooh and aaahh when they see the bouquets and décor.”
