About This Company

Clients say his work is impeccable, amazing, beyond compare. This big-hearted Texan thinks nothing of ringing up Martha Stewart for advice on how to make miniature tart shells. Whether it’s two or 26,000, corporate tailgate picnic or magical Balinese wedding extravaganza (he once built an entire village), Michael Willms of Entertainment Design Events is able to put a shine on things that renders them out of this world. CEO’s, stars, royalty, heads of state—nothing daunts him. You’ve likely seen his work featured in Grace Ormonde’s Wedding Style, Inside Weddings, and WeddingBells Magazine among others. “He’s the most disciplined creative person I’ve met,” says a special events advisor who has been in the business for years. “He’s not intimidated by high-end clients. He understands the whims of those who have the budget to go with their fame and fortune.” “I can’t see him doing anything that’s blah,” adds a popular caterer. Ask anyone; they all seem to agree: “A Michael Willms event is an event like no other.”

The client is the muse that sets this man on fire. His wedding ceremonies, like the one he orchestrated for a world leader’s granddaughter, actually receive standing ovations. But Michael, who says he learned his skills early in a family with a work ethic and a flair for entertaining, seems to know how to get the most out of any budget. His clients are as varied as the events he plans for them. He can work with very different people and styles, from traditional to funky, and he takes care of everything. His theater and arts background enables him to plan on a grand scale, and make events flow seamlessly with what he calls “movie industry logic.” But Willms says a large part of his success is his ability to remember minutia. “He has a brilliant mind. His events are so inspiring; your jaw just drops,” says a colleague. Other vendors find him passionate, caring and concerned about their needs, as well. They love his respect for their craft and the opportunity to be part of a larger, grander vision. “Although the client hired me,” confesses one vendor, “I felt like I was working with Michael as part of a team. I really enjoyed that.”

Many couples feel he is a healer bringing harmony, peace, calm and, above all, beauty to every affair. Handholding is something Michael does with great finesse. He’s attentive to both the client and the people who work with him. He goes shopping with them, serves as a personal stylist, finds the right jewelry, the right shoes…whatever they need. Brides talk about his creativity, insight and the personal connection they have with him. “When we wanted to acknowledge my husband’s parents who had passed away, Michael made a cutting garden in the foyer with a sign inviting guests to cut a flower in their remembrance and place the bloom in a huge wreath. We were married in the wreath’s loving embrace.”

“After it’s all done, Michael’s clients don’t want to lose touch with him because their experience knowing and working with him was such a good one,” says an associate. “He and his clients become really good friends—he’ll fly to the moon for them.”
