About This Company
Passionate about the “sweeter side of life,” Sonya Hong creates cakes with contemporary streamlined designs and delicious “American homestyle” flavors. During your personal consultation, she’ll also do a colored sketch of your cake. “Butterfly Cakes more than exceeded my expectations. They are sure to gratify the palate of the most discerning sweet tooth.”
Background
Sonya Hong began her professional career in the corporate world as an attorney but her passion always was on the “sweeter side of life”. So in 1999 she decided to follow her heart and began studying cakemaking and cake decorating at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. This led to more specialized cake decorating classes, lots of experimentation and an apprenticeship with a Bay Area cake company. She then established Butterfly Cakes with the goal of “doing away with the typical bland, dry cake cluttered with swags and ruffles and instead, creating cakes with contemporary, streamlined designs that are also delicious.”
Sonya’s hard work and talent has been recognized by some of the top-notch professionals in the wedding industry. Butterfly Cakes is on the Preferred Vendors Lists of many Bay Area wedding sites including the Flood Mansion, Merchant’s Exchange Ballroom, the Regency Center, the Omni Hotel and the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Sonya’s work has been featured in many publications including Wedding Bells and San Francisco Bride magazines.

Butterfly Cakes specializes in creative, custom-designed wedding and celebration cakes. The emphasis is on fresh, contemporary designs and delicious “American homestyle” flavors. Their list of specialties includes scrumptious cakes like Bananas Foster, Grandma’s Boston Cream Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, Ginger Heaven and Death by Chocolate. All cakes are made from scratch and made to order from the finest ingredients.
At your personal consultation and tasting, Sonya will sketch with colored pencils your proposed cake so you can actually see her ideas and make any enhancements that would create the cake of your sweetest dreams.
