When high schooler Ben Bercovici began experimenting with video in 1982, he liked its filmmaking aspects. But what he loved most was the emotional reward: “It was so gratifying to see the happy faces on people when they would watch one of my videos. More than anything else, those reactions made me become a videographer.”

Bercovici feels that his company’s greatest talent is the ability to envision. “When you’re covering a wedding, you are your client’s third eye,’ constantly looking for beautiful or romantic things that you know they would want to see. The way we know we’ve succeeded in doing that is when a bride calls later to say, I can’t believe what you were able to capture.’” Special Events Video Coordinator Julie Harman says, “The most important thing to our clients is that we stay unobtrusive. That’s why we love it when we hear, I know your guys were there, but I didn’t see them.’”

“It’s important to us to be really good listeners,” says Bercovici. During the initial consultation, they show clients videos, DVDs and a range of packages, all intended to find out their creative as well as emotional needs. “We never tell a client what we are going to do for them,” he promises. “We listen to what our clients want, and then give them exactly what they ask for.”

A florist who had B&B videotape her wedding praises their approach. “I had very specific views about videography, and I wanted our wedding shot in a certain way. I interviewed over a dozen videographers, and B&B was the only one that understood what I wanted.” B&B will tape a wedding in any style a couple requests, ranging from a traditional format that features linear, straight-through color coverage to an avant-garde video with a gritty MTV look, including black & white, scratchy frames, slow motion, fast cuts and dissolves.

One DJ who’s worked many weddings with B&B says the company “has a great balance of customer service and technology.” Bercovici adds that while he is proud of B&B’s state-of-the-art technology, “it’s not the biggest part of what makes our videos stand out. For us, the key to a good video is the editing, and editing isn’t just pushing a few buttons.” He says his crew, a group of experienced videographer/editors that has worked together for years, “is really into the spirit of weddings. They know what’s beautiful, what’s emotional and what’s romantic, and those qualities show up in the final edit.”

Another thing B&B strives for is no surprises. “We offer full coverage during a wedding, which means the client doesn’t have to be nervous about us leaving before the end of the event. We also meet with clients two weeks before the wedding to do a final pass over our notes and ask for any additional information.” The result is that B&B staff are rarely surprised, “although there was the time one couple forgot to tell us that Celine Dion was going to sing at their wedding!”

B&B’s professionalism, willingness to listen and unflappability add up to a great reputation. “If Steven Spielberg called me,” says one vendor, “I’d refer B&B to them.” Bercovici appreciates the accolades, but after 21 years in business, the biggest thrill of all for him is still watching people’s faces. “To this day, seeing a bride view one of our videos and break down in tears of joy is my favorite part of the work we do.”
