“Coordinating weddings is like producing little romantic movies,” declares Alex Alexander. “So when I plan a wedding, I play it over and over in my mind like a film to make sure every shot is perfect.” And that in a nutshell is Alex—hopelessly romantic, yet totally focused on the details.
Alex doesn’t have a set “look” for her events. “I love to personalize each wedding,” she says, “to find out how the bride and groom met, and what their common hobbies and interests are. Then I try to integrate these very particular details into their celebration in subtle ways.” For example, at one recent wedding the theme was stars and starfish. The groom had proposed to the bride in Carmel under the stars, and they had a beach wedding at Bacara in Santa Barbara. Alex hung hundreds of Swarovski crystal stars from the ballroom ceiling and placed gold leafed starfish at each place setting.
Alex also tunes in to her client’s needs. “She’s very sensitive to what each couple is trying to say,” notes one wedding professional. A booking agent concurs, saying, “Alex lets them make decisions, but gives them good guidance. It’s not all about her ego.” One bride recalls, “I liked Alex right away because she’s a good listener. She didn’t push her vision for the wedding.” Another appreciated Alex’s creativity: “I would say I want x’ and she would elaborate on that and turn it into something more beautiful than I could have imagined—without impacting my budget!”
Alex is known among her peers for being extremely organized and thorough. Her 15 years of coordinating and producing industry events and weddings has taught her how to handle every situation in a cool and calm manner. She knows what she wants and is very specific,” says one rental company representative. “So many event planners don’t have a clue. Alex has got all of her ducks in a row. She’s one of my favorite planners.”
“There are a hundred thousand things going on at every event, and Alex handles them all with poise,” a fellow vendor says. And, Alex points out, “If you’re really organized, you’re able to deal with the emotional issues that come with weddings.” One photographer who works often with Alex explains, “She’s very compassionate and really takes care of her brides. Alex understands that weddings are a very special time, but a touchy time too, because brides need to say good-bye to a previous life and it can be very stressful for them. Alex gets it.” A catering manager puts it this way: “Alex’s clients are calm in large part because of Alex. She puts them in a place where they can just relax.”
Good coordinators may be part set designer and part director, but they’re also something much more personal: Alex admits that weddings still make her cry. Alex sighs, “It’s so romantic being there to wave the couple off into their future, just like at the end of a movie.”
