Sometimes magic happens when two people stand before family and friends to proclaim their love for one another. The occasion may evoke tears, laughter or both, but we all know when we’ve seen a wedding ceremony performed beautifully—when the words spoken come not just from the mouth, but from the soul. This is the type of celebration Mary Jean Valente—the officiant whose business is fittingly called A Ceremony of the Heart—helps create.
“I approach each marriage with all of my attention and all my heart there for the couple,” Mary Jean explains. “I honor the spirit and true meaning of the day and custom-design each ceremony. It is important for me to give this momentous occasion the height, breadth and depth it deserves.”
For Mary Jean, this means building a special rapport with each couple, making them comfortable, and homing in on their spiritual preferences and personal identity. “Whatever your religious beliefs are, Mary Jean respects them,” confirms a former client whose nuptials Mary Jean co-officiated. “Because I’m part Jewish, part Catholic, and half Latin—and because my husband is Catholic—we had a lot to cover when we tied the knot! For each custom we used, Mary Jean described its mystical meaning to our guests, and it turned out beautifully.”
At A Ceremony of the Heart, Mary Jean encourages brides, grooms, and guests to experience the poignancy of the moment—the significance and extraordinary commitment of the vows. At the same time, she is able to sense the tone of each marriage ceremony and put people at ease. “She seems to know how to best capture everyone’s attention,” says a bride.
One of Mary Jean’s unique qualities is her velvety speaking voice and composure in front of any group. Years of working professionally as a public speaker and voiceover artist have given her an ability to calmly deliver any message in a natural, yet captivating way. “I believe that words should come alive,” she says. “When I do a reading or a service, I do it with affection and love for everyone present so that guests truly feel what they’re hearing.”
Serenity and grace are hallmarks of Mary Jean’s work, whether she’s performing a Native American smudging ceremony or more customary vows. Her extensive and lifelong pursuit of spiritual studies contributes to her ever-expanding repertoire of holy and cultural traditions. She has explored meditation, Buddhism, Catholicism, yoga, Judaism, and many other religions and practices.
As a celebrant, Mary Jean brings warmth and kindness of spirit to every wedding. “I hold a special place in my heart for each couple, whatever their beliefs may be,” she says. “People often comment that I must have known the bride and groom for a long time—even if we just met.” For Mary Jean, making everyone in the wedding feel safe, secure and surrounded by love is her goal. “I perform each ceremony as if it were the first, last and only ceremony I will ever perform,” she affirms.
