Wilshire Restaurant

Description

Where can you have a wedding that’s red-hot, Zen cool and “green” all over? The answer is Wilshire, a stylish and sophisticated restaurant in Santa Monica that fuses an inventive, organic menu with sexy, eye-catching design and comfortably chic outdoor space.

Chef and co-owner Christopher Blobaum, a former “Best Chef in Orange County,” has now brought his philosophy of creating seasonal menus from the freshest organic meat, fish, dairy and local produce to Los Angeles. Blobaum and his entire team have been guided by an eco-friendly concept since the beginning, from building the space to building the menus to the daily running of the restaurant (they use solar heated dishwashers, for example), and they’ve recently been honored with Santa Monica’s grand prize Sustainable Quality Award.

Knowing that Wilshire cares about the environment makes you feel good, but frankly, even if you didn’t know anything about their efforts to preserve the planet, you’d still feel good as soon as you saw the restaurant. White, wave-like undulating lines set against the dark wood exterior hint at the clever interplay of all four elements (earth, water, fire and air) that designer Thomas Schoos has created throughout the venue.

Inside, the sexy lounge, with its voluptuous brown leather seating, is aglow with hundreds of votive candles on the wall, and the dazzling bar is inlaid with backlit amber tiles so you feel like you’re looking into a glittering geode. This theme is continued in the Agate Room next door, a large private dining room for 38, with slices of the mineral, like so many cat eyes, set into the walls.

The main Dining Room is smartly urbane with leather booths, sparkling votives and amber bands circling modern columns. From here, you reach the glass doors to the pièce de resistance—the multilevel outdoor patio, a favorite spot for wedding parties.

Built around existing pine and ficus trees with a sail-like canvas canopy and outdoor heaters, the space is virtually all-season. The Upper Patio features a calming water wall with tall bamboo shoots and a modern take on a fireplace with tiny amber stones that blaze at night. A pergola overlooking the lower level makes a nice ceremony site.

The Lower Patio, visually separated from the upper level by another water feature set with urns that dance with fire, can be used for cocktails, dinner or dancing. There’s a freestanding bar decorated with an ornamental “tree” sprouting gas-fired candles instead of leaves, and a VIP-style C-Garden lounge above it with a commanding view of the entire outdoor area. Depending on the size of your guest list, you can arrange to use all three outdoor spaces or just one of them. But if you’d like something quite intimate, perhaps for a rehearsal dinner, there’s the Wilshire Suite, a very private dining room that lets you survey all the patio action through sliding glass doors.

While the setting is geared to arouse your ardor, the menu is planned to satisfy your soul, including decadent desserts from pastry chef Danielle Keene. Her innovative ice cream confections have become a draw in their own right, proving that going green has never been more indulgent.
