Description
We drive through the wrought-iron gates to the chirp of birds and the rustle of curling grapevines. Freshly turned earth perfumes the breeze and a turquoise sky arches overhead. Then we see it. A snow white crane spiraling against green, vineyard-covered hillsides.
"You saw the crane!" says owner Nick Nardolillo. "I saw her, too, as I walked the vineyard the night after I bought the property. She was flying, her wings completely outstretched before a silvery full moon." Explaining that the crane is a symbol of long life in Chinese Mythology, he adds, "I felt lucky, as if she flew out specifically to welcome me."
"We’re a vineyard, a working winery and bed and breakfast, all off the beaten path," Nick says as he opens the door to The White Crane Winery, a white clapboard farmhouse nestled in the vineyard. "I want the bride and her guests to feel relaxed here, as if they’ve gotten away from it all." We certainly do, as we step into the cool, dark tasting room. Pungent wine and oak scents surround us and we imagine planning a wedding here. Then Nick swings open a huge door onto the vineyard. "All of our grapes are hand-picked and crushed right here where we make our wine. Champagne, Chardonnays and Cabernets are served at your reception."
We look out, hoping to catch another glimpse of the white crane, and see The Vineyard Inn just a few grapevine rows away. Its front yard is a wedding arbor where a bride’s "walk down the aisle" is a glide through a rose garden and past a gurgling fountain strewn with petals. A white lattice gazebo, large enough for the whole wedding party, sits at the end of a lush lawn. The vineyard encircles everything so intimately that guests will surely feel part of the ceremony.
Afterwards everyone steps around to the back of the Inn for an al fresco reception snuggled against, what else? another magical backdrop of hills and vineyards. Wedding portraits taken here late in the day come alive with a fiery California sunset in the background.
Couples who want to extend this enchantment over several nights are in luck. Nick designed the original vintner’s residence to bring nature indoors by using a Wine Country palette of burgundy, gold and forest green. Every wall boasts at least one window framed in oak or hand-painted vines, turning a hillside view into an Impressionist work of art. Upstairs, both the Starlight Suite and Vineyard View Room overlook the wedding arbor. Brides enjoy getting ready in the Suite as they watch their guests seated below. Each of the two rooms offers an electric fireplace, private bath with Jacuzzi, and a balcony whose sweeping views conjure up memories of the day…and maybe even a glimpse of its beautiful muse.
As we leave the vineyard we search the skies again for the white crane. We don’t see her, but perhaps you will: she just might grace you with her gentle spirit while you share your first married kiss or piece of wedding cake. If not, take a vineyard stroll under the stars. There’s always a chance you’ll discover her flying against a silvery moon, bestowing wishes for a long and happy life.
