Description
The Westin St. Francis has so many rooms in which to hold an elegant wedding ceremony, a grand reception, or a banquet, brunch or business bash of any kind, that they cannot all be fully described on these two little pages. They can, however, be divided into just two categories: Grand Old Hotel Elegance and Thoroughly Modern Luxury.
In the first category, one finds the numerous event rooms of the original 1904 and 1907 hotel towers—rooms with original marble floors, gilt pillars, lacy wrought-iron balconies, intricately carved ceilings, rich furnishings, and a century’s worth of history. They include, among others: the Borgia Room, a jewel-box chamber with oak-paneled walls, a six-foot-tall marble fireplace, and a vaulted, delicately painted ceiling (originally the hotel’s chapel, it’s ideally suited for wedding ceremonies); the State Suite or the Windsor Suite (just right for a smaller ceremony and reception in one space); and the Colonial Room, a ballroom with Italianate murals, triple-branched standing candelabras, and gold-leafed columns separating little individual balconies.
The rooms in the second category, Thoroughly Modern Luxury, are especially appropriate for those searching for two things—space and splendor. For the most part, they are located in the "new" (circa 1972) hotel Tower, and include such features as sparkling crystal chandeliers, rich carpeting, and up-to-the-minute audiovisual equipment that will make business presentations a snap. A few of these rooms, such as the Grand Ballroom, are large and straightforward, best suited to business functions or weddings where the size of the room is its most important feature.
However, "straightforward" is the exception rather than the rule at the St. Francis, and the two most glamorous event rooms in the new Tower are simply sumptuous. Located on the 32nd floor and accessed by five glass elevators with spectacular views of downtown, they are known collectively as the Imperial Floor. Glowing, translucent blue-glass chandeliers with matching eight-foot tall torchres combine with hundreds of tiny pin-spot lights to provide illumination. Floors and walls have been hand-stenciled with soft celadon and gold decorations by Bay Area artists. Wraparound San Francisco views—from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate—are framed in fourteen-foot-high bay windows draped with floor-to-ceiling silk curtains. Victor’s, as the left-hand room is known, is fitted with a Regency-style armoire of glowing burl veneer that opens to serve as a bar. Alexandra’s, on the right, is finished with peach drapes whose inner linings have been hand-painted by a San Francisco set designer. Access to the room is through a set of ten-foot-high red-leather doors. Wedgwood china, crystal goblets, and floor-length satin table linens complete the package.
Old San Francisco glamour or modern opulence? The range and quality of options at the Westin St. Francis is astonishing, and your choice will not be easy. You might decide to combine both eras, with a ceremony in the Borgia Room followed by dinner and dancing in Alexandra’s. Whichever room plays host to your event, the setting will most certainly be splendid.
