Westin Long Beach

Description

When we arrived at the Westin Long Beach, we were twenty minutes early for our appointment, which gave us a chance to experience one of the things that makes this hotel so wonderful: the personal attention they give everyone who walks through the door. While we were waiting, four different staff members came up to us to ask if we needed help or would like something to drink, and a couple of them even stayed to chat. These accommodating employees had no idea who we were, but they made us feel like VIPs.

We have a theory that the staff’s friendly and gracious manner stems in part from the building itself. Its unique crescent shape gives many of the rooms and hallways a gentle curve, and literally "takes the edge off" the entire hotel.

That softness of line is first felt in the lobby, which follows the contour of the building in a long, elegant sweep. Filled with natural light from skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows, and lined with soaring columns, it’s an uplifting place to settle into a chair and unwind.

Just off the lobby is the Grill Patio, a lush outdoor courtyard where ceremonies are held. Most of the greenery here comes from a profusion of leafy vines, blanketing four metal towers and a pair of arches that span the space. Couples exchange vows at the rear of the courtyard in front of a glass fountain topped with a statue of a graceful young woman.

Indoors, the banquet rooms have a completely different appeal. The Ocean Ballroom on the ground floor is totally self-contained, with its own entrance and marble-floored foyer. Designed for more intimate events in a Modern Luxury style, its decor has a tailored feel: walls painted in subtle shades of light and dark gray; windows covered with warm, mahogany plantation shutters; and interesting Japanese-influenced sconces and chandeliers made of alabaster paper.

If you have an extensive guest list, you should know that The Westin Long Beach houses the largest hotel ballroom in the area. Used in its entirety, the Centennial Ballroom can accommodate over 1,500 people, but it’s also divisible into smaller sections. This third-floor venue is exceptional in other ways, too. The vast room (and its huge prefunction area) has few right angles. This gives the space an expansiveness and fluidity you seldom find in a hotel ballroom. Other swank features include a high coffered ceiling, walls trimmed extensively in rich cherrywood, and gleaming brass handles and accents on the doors. If anyone wants some fresh air, the adjoining outdoor patio awaits with its cityscape view.

Like the rest of the hotel, the chic, "residential" guestrooms have their special touches as well. Each has one of Westin’s famed Heavenly Beds (the linens are gorgeous!), and many afford views of the harbor over the top of the Performing Arts Center. When you’re not luxuriating in your room there’s the swimming pool, fitness center, and complimentary shuttle to city attractions, or you can walk over to the nearby Pike at Rainbow Harbor or the famous Pine Avenue, two commercial centers offering plenty of shopping, restaurants and even comedy clubs.

The Westin Long Beach made a strong first impression on us, and the more we saw, the more we liked. We’re confident their hospitality and first-class facilities will win you over, too.
