Vintner’s Golf Club

Description

Event sites are like novels: some reveal the plot right away, with grand architecture or landscaping on the first page; others tell their story more slowly, keeping you in the dark until a later chapter. Such is the case with Vintner’s Golf Club, a book you certainly can’t tell from its cover. Once you get past the simple stucco façade, however, what you see will put an enormous smile on your face.

First of all, the large one-room clubhouse is a real charmer, with the look and feel of an Old California-style adobe. The abundance of wood—in antiques, wall hutches, tables and seating—gives the space a rustic warmth. Overhead, thick hand-hewn beams support a peaked ceiling with a wrought-iron chandelier hanging from its center. At the weathered wood bar you’ll be sitting on a pony-hair-covered stool and resting your elbows on a galvanized tin surface. In the middle of the room, the focal point is a round table made of hammered copper and wrought iron, flanked by a pair of kitschy pony-hair chairs. There’s an indoor/outdoor fireplace opposite the bar, and tall arched doorways at both ends of the room open out onto a wraparound patio.

Ah yes, the patio. This is the facility’s pice de résistance, not only because it’s beautifully designed in three distinct sections, but because it has a view that will stop you in your tracks. From almost anywhere on this sunny expanse you can feast your eyes on sparkling Vintner Lake just steps away, and the fairways, forest and rolling hills beyond. As the afternoon breeze sways cattails along the shore and fans the ducks cruising around the water, you couldn’t ask for a more heavenly place. The long stretch of patio directly behind the clubhouse is half sheltered by a red-tiled overhang, and green market umbrellas provide additional shade. Canvas-and-clear plastic shades attached to the overhang can be rolled down to shield guests from nippy weather, or to create a more intimate connection to the club’s interior. On the spacious right-side terrace, leafy maple trees throw dappled shadows over an array of wrought-iron tables and chairs. The third patio area on the left side of the building faces a putting green, and can be used for additional dining or dancing. Throughout this tri-part patio, many of the tabletops are made of Mexican tiles painted in vivid floral designs of sunflower yellow, rust and royal blue. Leave them as is for a festive ambiance, or cover them with linen for a more formal celebration. Either way, the surrounding scenery is always gorgeous.

During the week, the clubhouse serves as pro shop, restaurant and bar for the golfers, but when you have a party here the place is all yours. You decide how you want the room to look: keep whatever elements you like (hmmmthat hammered copper table is both handsome and useful), or have everything removed and replaced with your own choice of furniture and décor. When the weather is warm, most couples host their reception outdoors and use the clubhouse for a bar and dancing. However, the staff here is completely open to your ideas, and will give you total flexibility in choreographing your event. They’ll also let you take photos virtually anywhere on the grounds, and even adjust tee times for a barefoot ceremony out on the 9th tee.

There are plenty of lodgings nearby, so consider planning a full weekend event. Winetasting, sightseeing, bicycling, hiking and, of course, golf are just a few of the play options available. These activities will only add to the wonderful time you’re guaranteed to have at Vintner’s Golf Club.
