Description
Nestled against a wooded slope in the private and secluded Saratoga hills is the Montalvo Arts Center, a beautiful Mediterranean-style mansion. Originally developed in 1912 as the private residence of Senator James Duval Phelan, the property is now home to an arboretum and a nonprofit center for the arts.
A narrow one-way road leads up to the Center. As you round the last turn, you get your first glimpse of the estate’s expansive manicured lawns and colorful gardens, as well as the mansion’s terra cotta-tile roof, light stucco walls and wide veranda. To your left, you’ll also see the Love Temple, one of two ceremony sites on the grounds. Recently renovated, it’s an open-air, white-columned pavilion, set at the end of a wide brick path. Couples get married on its steps, with a view of the surrounding Mediterranean garden and the Center and woods in the background.
Directly behind the Center, the Oval Garden offers a rose garden setting complete with classical statues and wisteria-covered pergolas. This open-air courtyard is an intimate and delightful place for a ceremony; a brick pathway serves as your center aisle and a column-supported arcade is the backdrop for taking vows.
The Center’s first floor and some of its outdoor patios are available for receptions. Guests can mingle on the veranda, sipping champagne and sampling hors d’oeuvres while enjoying splendid views of the estate’s lawns and gardens. Reserve well in advance. The Montalvo Arts Center is an extraordinary site for an elegant and sophisticated wedding.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The Oval Garden accommodates 200 seated or standing. The Side Veranda seats 120 in case of inclement weather. The Love Temple capacity is 150 seated or standing. |

Fees & Deposits
For weddings, the Montalvo Circle reception rental fee is $12,500 for 8 hours use. Note that fees paid over $3,500 are tax deductible. Half the total fee is required as a nonrefundable deposit when the site is booked; the balance is payable 30 days prior to the event along with a refundable $1,000 damage deposit and a certificate of insurance. The rental fee for a ceremony ranges from $800 for a “sweetheart” ceremony (up to 20 guests at a designated location) to $2,400 for a Love Temple or Oval Garden ceremony. Call for details.
For other special events and business functions, the villa can accommodate groups of 10–300. For fees and details, call the event planning staff at 408/961-5856.
Availability
Ceremonies are held between March and October, and take place 10am–1pm. Receptions are held year-round, daily, 2pm–10pm in 8-hour blocks. For other special and business functions, year-round, daily, 8am–10pm.
