Why We Like This Place
When a relative asks if she can have her wedding at your house, that’s flattering, but when half her bridal party also asks…then you know the house is special. And Villa Amodei, an elegant Italian Renaissance estate with gorgeous grounds, is indeed very special.Nestled on 30 acres in Somis, a picturesque town dotted with fruit orchards and horse farms, Villa Amodei—which means “the love of God” in Latin—has been a labor of love from the beginning. Owners Jennifer and Ivan Amodei designed and built their dream house in 1999, and their impeccable attention to detail is evident as soon as you arrive at the imposing gate. Italian cypress and olive trees flank the wrought-iron entry, a fitting welcome to the location’s classic Italian style.
Once inside the gate, you drive along a quiet, winding road that cuts through rows of lemon trees, giving you the impression that you’re in the Tuscan countryside. A circular cobblestone motor court with a gurgling fountain fronts the two-story, tawny-toned villa and rose garden, all of which could easily grace a copy of Architectural Digest. One charming personal touch is the etching of lemon leaves in the walkways that lead to the house and gardens. In fact, lemons played a role in the first wedding at the villa: when Jennifer’s cousin, Kristina Knopf, asked if she could get married on the property, the owners agreed and then promptly bulldozed two acres of lemon trees, replacing them with a series of manicured gardens for her upcoming nuptials. The wedding was so successful that other brides envisioned themselves exchanging vows here as well. It didn’t take long for the two cousins—Jennifer the interior designer and Kristina the party planner—to realize that the setting was just too magical to keep to themselves.
The expansive formal garden to the left of the house, with its large lawn and centerpiece pepper tree, make a fairytale ceremony site. Overlooking this grassy area is a shady portico, which serves as a guest check-in. Through an archway of brightly colored bougainvillea is the back patio, which runs the length of the house and is a favorite spot for cocktails or a buffet. A large multitiered fountain and rows of potted topiary add visual interest. At the far end, a raised section adorned with a large stone fireplace can serve as a lounge, a stage for your DJ, or a backdrop for your bridal table.
Continuing the formal garden theme, there’s a huge grassy area three steps down from the patio and surrounded by white balustrades, where tables are set up for dinner. As night falls, the orchards are illuminated with ground lights, adding to the sense that you’re in your own enchanted gardens.
Every aspect of Villa Amodei has been honed to make the wedding experience ideal. Photo backdrops abound, and the owners are constantly adding delightful new details. But perhaps what most impresses you is the glow of warmth and love at Villa Amodei, making it an irresistible environment for your special day.
