Description

If you’ve ever dreamed of having an authentic Victorian wedding, then consider The Victorian at Heritage Square. Both local lore and the quaint charms of the Age of Innocence are embodied in this unique venue on Santa Monica’s Main Street, just one block from the beach.

First built near the Hotel Miramar in 1892 as the home of one of Santa Monica’s founding families, the historic building was moved to its current location in 1973. (The neighboring house made the move also, and was transformed into the California Heritage Museum, which now sits just across the Square.) The Victorian was completely renovated, with the main rooms enlarged and the addition of a wine cellar, and has become a favorite site for weddings, bar mitzvahs, formal parties or just about any type of special event.

A brick path (lined with candles and twinkle lights at night), leads to a pale-yellow shingled home trimmed in deep green and fronted by trees, flowers, and outdoor seating. A polished oak bar greets you as you enter, and is a popular gathering space for cocktails, as are the home’s two patios. Throughout, the decor is characteristic Victorian—antique furnishings, classical artwork and candles. The family room, often used to house a buffet table or the wedding cake, has a fireplace, ceiling fan, and something you might not notice behind sheer curtains: the original, curved glass bay windows.

The hand-painted Garden Room features an octagonal enclave at one corner framed by tall windows, and is an excellent place for a ceremony or to seat the guest of honor or wedding party. A line of French doors opens to a delightful terrace, where guests sit amongst trees seeming to grow up from the wooden floor and through the latticework canopy. The terrace is enclosed for warmth and comfort. Other ceremony sites are the Heritage Museum lawn and the nearby beach.

Wedding ceremonies can also take place upstairs, right next to an oak fireplace and in front of bay windows covered by gossamer curtains. This space also has a built-in bar and a covered veranda where guests can mingle before the ceremony.

Across the hall in the Boardroom, black-and-white photos of the Victorian era dot oak-paneled walls. High-backed wooden chairs flank a long conference table, making this room a fine choice for business meetings or luncheons. And why not spice up your next corporate party by holding a "murder mystery dinner" at the Victorian? It’s the perfect place to discover if Professor Mustard killed Mrs. Peacock with the candlestick in the Library!

Duck Duck Mousse, the in-house caterers, love to create original menus and distinctive party themes for events held at the Victorian, but they’re also quite happy to cater off-site meetings, parties and special occasions, too. No matter where they apply their culinary talents, you’ll always wind up with an event that meets your high expectations.
