Description
"Fun and formal" is the motto of the Caudle family, who bought and refurbished the sprawling Hemphill Mansion in 1999. Perched on a rise in the very heart of historic Old Town in Roseville, the house and its grounds have been a community hub for well over a century. During the town’s earliest days, the property’s then-barn served as a stagecoach depot; later in the 30s it became a bus terminal. When town mogul Wallace Hemphill built his mansion here in 1909, his wife Vivia made the home’s sweeping Great Room the town’s showplace and social center.
Now, instead of being a place that people breeze through, it’s a place where folks want to stay a while—especially if they’re planning to get married here. Couples like the owners’ friendly attitude and the facility’s old-fashioned charm. The Victorian books only one wedding a day, with large summertime weddings always held in the evening, when the gabled building becomes a wonderland of twinkle lights. Even the oaks, shrubs, and the four stately palms out front are lit up. You can have your ceremony in front of the fireplace or in the lacy 90-year-old gazebo out in the rose garden, and then dance the night away in Vivia’s Great Room until 2am. Bob Caudle, a local DJ with a flourishing business, is always on hand to supply the music.
While some couples arrive in gown and tux in a horse-drawn carriage, most get ready in the dual suites provided as dressing rooms. The bride’s is on the mansion’s third floor, while a unique "Groom’s Closet" below the main floor is lovingly outfitted with a billiards table, bar, jukebox, pinball machine and Elvis and Ratpack memorabilia. Other nostalgic touches include an in-house Victorian soda fountain, and an old Victrola playing the Wedding March, but you’re welcome to adopt a more modern theme.
If the bride and groom have tied the knot in the gazebo on the mansion’s north lawn, they’re whisked away via a back staircase, while guests stroll around to the expansive south lawn at the front of the mansion for a glass of champagne. When the newlyweds reappear, they materialize on a balcony above the lawn, the ideal spot for toasts and congratulations. The festivities
continue with an al fresco reception on the lawn under soft, glowing lamplight. The Victorian offers fourteen separate menus, all prepared in-house by a long-standing "gourmet club" comprised of the Caudle family and their friends.
After dining and visiting, the wedding party is invited into the suite of redwood-paneled rooms where Vivia Hemphill once reigned. Here, air-conditioning cools summer nights, and the music can be cranked up until the wee hours. The cake is displayed and cut in a bay-windowed nook of the Great Room, and dancing takes place on a gleaming almond wood floor that the Caudles refinish every six months. While the room’s focal point is a massive white fireplace, ornate wall sconces and period wallpaper help re-create the romantic Victorian atmosphere.
Weddings are celebrated year-round at The Victorian, along with private parties and corporate events. The Caudles are known for homey extra touches that they often throw in for free, like red rose centerpieces on Valentine’s Day, or hula dancers for a Hawaiian-themed retirement party.
Still going strong after nearly 100 years, The Victorian now holds an open house on Saturday mornings to showcase the mansion to the public, and its glittering nighttime splendor has been known to inspire passing motorists to pull over and book the place on the spot.
