Vibiana

Description

They say there are no second acts in life, but the rebirth of the magnificent Vibiana as an exciting new event location in downtown L.A. is proof otherwise. Through the concerted efforts of community activists, members of the L.A. Conservancy and committed investors, this grande dame landmark has not only been saved from the wrecking ball, but transformed into a “take your breath away” setting for weddings, concerts and special occasions.

Designed in the Spanish Baroque style and patterned after San Miguel Del Mar in Barcelona, Vibiana (originally St. Vibiana’s Cathedral) was built in 1876 as the Catholic Archdiocese in Los Angeles. Over the next century it flourished—until the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake, when it suffered some severe damage. Almost immediately, the L.A. Conservancy geared up to save the building that had been such a vital part of the city’s history, not to mention a graceful work of art. After some legal maneuvering, the scarred structure was sold to one of L.A.’s most respected developers, who began a long and expensive process to completely retrofit, redefine and revitalize Vibiana.

Mindful of maintaining the integrity of this landmark, the developer strengthened and secured the building while keeping its original beauty and appearance intact. At first glance, the limestone exterior with its newly restored cupola and bell tower may still resemble a church, but the site has been de-sanctified and its massive double doors thrown open to welcome celebrants of all backgrounds, faiths and persuasions. In short, it’s now secular heaven.

The foyer entryway is dazzling with its gold embellished barrel ceilings and black-and-white marble floor. To your left are massive glass-and-iron doors that lead to a beautiful garden on the property’s grounds at Main and Second. Surrounded by tall wrought-iron fencing and enough greenery to ensure privacy, it has a long center aisle that ends at a landscaped island, a natural spot for exchanging your vows. From this verdant vantage point, you can look up and see such notable buildings as City Hall and the historic L.A. Times Building, both of which light up at night making the cityscape come alive.

But it’s Vibiana’s interior and its truly grand proportions that make this a one-of-a-kind wedding location. It’s an architectural marvel with soaring gilded ceilings, an abundance of white marble, and rows of clerestory windows that let in natural light. Long rows of white columns on either side stand in contrast to the deeply burnished dark wood floors. At the far end, the old altar is now an impressive white marble stage with plenty of space to set up your sweetheart table, make toasts or bring in a band (the acoustics here are great). While the grandeur of the old cathedral can be seen in the scale of the venue, some features have been re-imagined in fun new ways, like the old confessionals, which can be turned into photo booths for your guests. Perhaps it’s this combination of putting a modern spin on old-world beauty that’s made Vibiana such a runaway success since the day it opened.
