V. Sattui Winery

Description

The scenic Napa Valley abounds with grand wineries, many of them doing big business these days. With so many players vying for a visitor’s attention, the "little gems" may go unnoticed. It would be a shame to miss out on V. Sattui, a small family winery run by the fourth generation of Sattuis, who demonstrate both pride in their winemaking traditions and warm hospitality. Even the marketing of their award-winning wines is a personal affair—all vintages are sold directly to their customers via mail-order or at the winery itself. This is the sort of authentic quality and old-fashioned charm that sets just the right note for heartfelt special occasions.

Founded back in 1885, V.Sattui occupies a massive vine-covered stone building in the classic manner of Early California. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Napa: a backdrop of magnificent hillsides covered with chaparral and live oaks; acres of lush, green lawns; and row upon row of grapevines.

Like the grapes themselves, wedding ceremonies flourish in such a bucolic environment. A stone patio in front of the winery has several small terraces that make a dramatic descent down to a courtyard hugged by the two-story winery. A path sprinkled with rose petals marks the wedding aisle, and flowering shrubs, saplings, a gnarled oak, and garlands draped on the balconies create a lovely garden atmosphere. Evening ceremonies in the courtyard are magical, with luminarias flickering along the aisle and twinkle-lights illuminating the balconies. For larger weddings, say "I do" under the ivy-covered tower that overlooks an expanse of emerald lawn bordered by colorful flowerbeds, with the magnificent vista of the Napa Valley in the distance.

While the bridal party takes photographs in the many picturesque settings on the property, guests soak up the vineyard ambiance on the front patio, where water splashing from a large Mediterranean-style fountain contributes to the festive mood.

Have one of the outdoor areas set for an al fresco reception, or invite guests to dine in a castle-like wine cellar, where hand-hewn stone walls, heavy ceiling timbers and wine barrels evoke an Old World atmosphere. A pleasant, piquant aroma wafts from the aging wines, kept behind wrought-iron gates in four caves reached through a stone archway. The cellar takes on a haunting beauty by candlelight, so go ahead and lavish the room with votives—in wall ledges, atop rows of oaken barrels, on the tables. Fancy candelabras are an elegant effect, and draping the barrels with Tivoli and icicle lights add even more sparkle.

At V. Sattui, the wine you serve will be as appreciated as the scenery. Among their many accolades, V. Sattui was awarded the 2006 Golden Winery Award, the California State Fair’s top honor. They can even personalize wine bottles with gold foil labels commemorating your celebration. When their fine varietals are paired with the exquisite cuisine served up by the event pros at Wine Valley Catering, you and your guests will savor every detail of your culinary experience. In fact, everything at this historic venue will make your celebration a landmark event.
