University of Redlands

Description

Just by itself, the city of Redlands is a bright green oasis in the dry lands east of Los Angeles. But people will tell you that the city’s heart—the greenest of the green—is the University of Redlands. From its palm-lined streets and broad lawns to its heritage oaks and stately red-tiled buildings, the school has every serene, dignified attribute that comes to mind when you think of the classic college campus.

It also has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to wedding venues: six outdoor and four indoor sites, ranging from the giant, park-like quad to an intimate rose garden. Some people like the Hall of Letters, a venerable classroom building on a small rise whose tree-fringed back lawn makes an ideal spot for a ceremony. The university’s Greek Amphitheater sits just behind it, creating a sophisticated setting. Around the side a broad lawn, shaded by pines and bordered by a small garden, is perfect for a reception. The lawn seems to float at the top of the campus, looking down on immaculately tended athletic fields and a sea of red-roofed academic buildings. The Hall of Letters entrance terrace often functions as a post-ceremony head table area and dance floor, with guest tables and chairs arranged on the lawn beside it.

Memorial Chapel, which anchors the north end of the university’s grand central quad, has a classic Greek façade of Ionic columns and a triangular pediment. Its spacious interior can comfortably hold hundreds for a large wedding ceremony, but also accommodates smaller groups in a wonderfully deft way by seating them on the chorus seats directly behind the altar under a great stained-glass triptych. From the Chapel it’s only a few steps to the park-like quad, a great expanse of grass and spreading oaks. The university is happy to section off parts of it to provide a private and exclusive space.

Couples frequently pledge their vows in front of the Administration Building, where the backdrop is the quad, stretching a quarter mile to Memorial Chapel with the scarp of the San Bernardino Mountains beyond. This spot is also a favorite among photographers, because it captures almost every visual element that makes this campus so attractive.

No matter which university location you choose for your wedding, you’ll get the same high level of service. In fact, besides the campus’s visual appeal, what gets consistent raves here is customer service—a willingness to do everything that can be done within a client’s resources. The Hospitality Services Department hosts scores of weddings each year and relishes the consistent kudos it receives. To ensure that the food is topnotch too, they have partnered with Bon Appetit, the exclusive and award-winning caterer for special events at the university.

While many newer college campuses seem to be hurriedly constructed hodgepodges, Redlands has spent decades quietly accumulating a reserve of good looks and patina of history. If you want a wedding that evokes a sense of grace and timelessness, this is the place to go.
