Why We Like This Place
San Francisco’s past and present meet downtown at the city’s most prestigious location: Nob Hill. Here, at the intersection of California and Powell, cable cars roll by as they have for more than 100 years, past century-old buildings erected by our Barbary Coast forebears.
One structure that’s stood the test of time on this very corner is the venerable University Club, a glorious brick facility that has occupied this spot since 1909. The Club’s first organizers purchased the property from city founder Leland Stanford, relocating their social club here because the original UC clubhouse on Sutter Street had been destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.
Today, the University Club still echoes those long-ago beginnings. However, while it continues as a private membership-based social and athletic club, it also rents out a plethora of fancy, history-rich event spaces on its 3rd and 4th floors to non-members. The fourth-floor lounge is downright stunning, with one long wall of windows that open out onto the intricate geometric pattern of San Francisco’s Financial District skyline. Couples who get married in this room not only benefit from the city as a backdrop, they’re surrounded by opulent wood and gilt trim, brocade wallpaper, and glittering chandeliers.
Right down the hall, past original artwork, is the more subdued library room. Warm and cozy, it has green leather couches, red carpets, a working fireplace and a multitude of shelves containing over 3,000 leather-bound books. It also boasts windows overlooking downtown to the east, and serves as a convenient getaway for brides and grooms who want to find some alone time, commune with the wedding party, or simply relax during the festivities.
Partygoers can also take advantage of two additional spaces on this floor: the wood-paneled game room with a pool table for a little diversion, and the circular Old World bar next to it. Both provide overflow areas for the ceremony, and encourage guests to linger over cocktails while taking in details like the red carpets and wood accents.
Down on the third floor, the attractive dining room allows brides to truly personalize their event. Bright linens and flowers embellish this wide-open banquet room, which features exposed wood beams overhead. Add to this the Club’s award-winning cuisine and your reception will shine. After dinner, cake and aperitifs can be served in the adjacent Black Cat Bar, a congenial choice for winding down your celebration.
The University Club has eleven traditional guestrooms and five suites, enabling the wedding party to make the entire club “home” for the weekend. Host a “morning after” brunch before guests depart for the airport, with box lunches that contain a special note from the newlyweds!
At the University Club, events aren’t just in the city, they’re of the city in a very elemental way. The action happens right downtown, in a setting where every visual motif harks back to another era. Like former members John Muir and Herbert Hoover, who once sipped cocktails here themselves, you’ll appreciate this elegant yet comfortable destination that has a special place in San Francisco history.
