Description
The past and present of San Francisco collide downtown at the intersection of California and Powell: Cable cars roll by as they have for more than 100 years, while motorcycles zip up and down the hills; and today’s tourists make their way to Chinatown, where they sightsee amidst century-old buildings erected by our Barbary Coast forebears.
One structure that’s stood the test of time on this very corner is the venerable University Club, a glorious, old-fashioned brick facility that has occupied this spot since 1909. The Club’s first organizers purchased the property from city founder Leland Stanford, relocating their social club here because the original UC clubhouse on Sutter Street had been destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.
Today, the University Club still echoes those long-ago beginnings. However, while it continues as a membership-based social and athletic club, it also rents out a plethora of fancy, history-rich event spaces on its 3rd and 4th floors. The fourth floor lounge is downright stunning, with one long wall of windows that open out onto the intricate geometric pattern of San Francisco’s Financial District skyline. Couples who get married in this room not only benefit from the city as a backdrop, they’re surrounded by opulent wood and gilt trim, brocade wallpaper, and glittering faux-candle chandeliers.
Right down the hall, past colorful artwork, is the more subdued library room. Akin to something straight out of an East Coast prep school, it’s deliciously masculine, with green leather couches, red carpets, fireplaces, and shelves and shelves of leather-bound books. It also boasts windows overlooking downtown to the east, and here, brides and grooms find some alone time, commune with the wedding party, or generally relax during the festivities.
Partygoers can also take advantage of two additional spaces on this floor: the wood-paneled game room with a pool table for a little diversion, and the circular old-world bar next to it. Both provide overflow areas for the ceremony, and encourage guests to linger over cocktails while taking in details like the red carpets and warm wood accents.
Down on the third floor, the attractive dining room allows brides to truly personalize their event. Bright linens and flowers embellish this wide-open banquet room, which features exposed wood beams overhead. Here, the award-winning cuisine of the Club makes receptions shine. After dinner, cake and aperitifs can be served in the adjacent Black Cat Bar, a cozy space for winding down your celebration.
At the University Club, events aren’t just in the city, they’re of the city in a very elemental way. The action happens right downtown, in a setting where every visual motif harks back to another era. Like former members John Muir and Herbert Hoover who sipped cocktails here once themselves, you’ll appreciate this elegant yet comfortable destination that has a special place in San Francisco history.
