Description
Imagine a casually sophisticated vacation compound in the Hamptons (if the Hamptons had palm trees). Then cross it with the exceedingly inviting setting of a Ralph Lauren ad, and you start to understand the romantic appeal of Twin Palms Restaurant. Although there isn’t an ocean within miles, its towering palms, moss green barn doors and intricate awning of canvas sails create a charming "getaway" ambiance for your weddingright in the heart of Pasadena’s toniest area.
At the corner of Green and De Lacey, Twin Palms Restaurant has been a mega-hit since it first opened in Old Town Pasadena, the gold standard of downtown revitalizations known for pricey boutiques, hip clubs and historic buildings. (Yes, Kevin Costner and ex-wife Cindy were once high-profile part-owners of this popular venue). Recently renovated, the restaurant frontage on De Lacey is kept private by a high white plaster wall with wrought-iron inset peepholes. During regular hours, the double-wide barn doors are thrown open to reveal a huge courtyard patio built around its namesake palm trees. (For weddings, entry is through a smaller door to the left so privacy and access can be controlled). High above the Patio are white wood crossbeams with suspended lights, and a web of ship’s rigging that operates the enormous canvas sails, which can be unfurled individually to screen out the sun, filter the breeze or completely protect you from rain while dining and dancing.
To your immediate left is the casual Marlin Bar, named for the mounted trophy fish above it. At the opposite end of the Patio there’s a large semi-circular open-air bar and to your right, up a few stairs, is the hardwood-floored Terrace. Proudly decorated with whimsical oils by a staffer who attends the prestigious College of Design, this area is used for wedding ceremonies. If your guest list is relatively small, you can also host a reception here; for larger weddings, it’s possible to take over the entire Patio. A stage on the far side of the Patio is perfect for your band or DJ. And since the restaurant often presents live entertainment, keep in mind that it’s a great place for a jazzy or rockin’ rehearsal dinner, cooled in the summer by the light spray from timed misters.
For an air-conditioned indoor alternative, Twin Palms offers its Dining Room. Located on the other side of that semi-circular bar (which is actually double-sided and provides a nice open view of the Patio activity during cocktails), this clubby room has hardwood floors, exposed brick walls and bentwood leather seats. In the corner there’s a "Wine Cellar" niche for more intimate gatherings, decorated with racks of vintage wines.
Whichever section of the restaurant you choose, you’ll be treated to New American cuisine, prepared by Twin Palms’ award-winning chef. Recently honored by Zagat Guide as "THE place to throw a party," the restaurant and its expert catering staff is accustomed to hosting celebrity weddings and events for the People’s Choice Awards, Tournament of Roses and Habitat for Humanity. We have no doubt they can help you design a memorable wedding that makes your guests feel like they’ve been whisked out of the city, without ever leaving town.
