Description
Trinity Episcopal Church appears to have been lifted, lock, stock and stained-glass windows, from a quaint village in England—but don’t let the imposing Norman-Romanesque architecture fool you. Beneath the church’s 104-year-old Colusa sandstone exterior beats a progressive heart. This church may look old-fashioned, but the attitudes of its clergy and congregation are firmly rooted in the 21st century.
Trinity is the oldest Episcopal church west of the Rockies, and continues to be a thriving cornerstone of the community, with a diverse, inclusive congregation. Project Open Hand, a service that brings free hot meals to AIDS patients, got its start here. Theater companies and recovery groups rent space from Trinity, and the church hosts many innovative workshops. More important to those planning a wedding, the church places no restrictions on who can get married here. You need not be a member of the congregation, you need not be baptized and you can bring your own clergy or design the ceremony yourself. Same-sex blessings are permitted, and the participation of family members in the ceremony is encouraged. The staff has many innovative ways to include children in a wedding. This is especially nice for couples who are "blending" families, as it gives them a chance to give everyone an active role in starting their new life together.
The church features rainbow-hued stained-glass windows, an 86-foot-long aisle, an antique Skinner organ (one of only four on the West Coast), and a grand piano. The lectern is carved in the shape of an angel, and has a PA system for readings by family members or friends. The altar, which is decorated with brass candlesticks for wedding ceremonies, is inlaid with intricate mosaic designs. The church’s ornateness makes very elaborate decorations unnecessary, which is nice for those on a tight budget.
Trinity Episcopal Church is ideal for couples who want the dignified beauty, but not the stuffy rigidity, of a traditional church wedding. Who says you can’t have your wedding cake, and eat it too?
