Tomales Bay Resort and Marina

Description

It comes as no surprise that when they visited California in late 2005, Prince Charles and Camilla headed for Inverness, an enclave of coastal cottages, dairies, and organic farms set amid the miles of craggy coast and dusky woods of the incomparable Point Reyes National Seashore. The jewel at the center of this natural crown is Tomales Bay, and one of the bay’s sparkling facets is Tomales Bay Resort. This handsomely situated blue and white Cape Cod-style resort, with its 62-berth marina and two private beaches, is the perfect place for an active retreat, family getaway or reunion, or a memorable destination wedding.

You might want to greet guests in the property’s Tomales Bay Conference Center, an airy room that sports light, natural alder floors, sky-blue walls, a cloud-white beamed ceiling, big windows, and nine floor-to-ceiling mirrors that enhance the sense of space. Glass doors open onto a petite patio surrounded by a California coastal fence. Paved in rose-colored Sonoma flagstone, this peaceful little sanctuary with its zen-style fountain and careful landscaping opens onto the resort’s own Tom Bahia Beach and the launch site for Blue Waters Kayaking, the oldest full-service tour company on the bay. Whether it’s a sunset or full moon tour, a six-hour paddle and hike or one of the popular oyster-tasting tours, a bachelor or bachelorette party, a team-building excursion, or a good time with family and friends, you’ll have additional opportunities to expand your event’s horizons. Comfy tables, benches, horseshoe pits and fire pits make the beach a great place to relax, but for more formal entertaining, saunter over to Barnaby’s by the Bay.

You might actually want to start off on top of Barnaby’s, where the glass-walled Observation Deck affords panoramic views: boats bobbing in the marina; quiet scallops of sand on the water’s edge; seabirds dipping and gliding over the bay. It’s a picturesque place for a smaller ceremony or gathering. To your right you’ll spy Bay View Beach, the property’s other private piece of shoreline. The L-shaped jetty that juts from this point is another attractive ceremony setting. The adjacent grassy lawn area can be tented and staged for post-vow receptions and dancing. But why not simply descend one of two sets of stairs for sit-down dining in a nautical environment? Celebrants will feel at ease in the warm and welcoming interior of Barnaby’s Restaurant, with its hardwood floors, captain’s chairs and big picture windows. Doors open onto a glass-walled lower deck ideal for cake-cutting, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, or convivial conversation. Or invite revelers to warm up to each other in tried-and-true style with an oyster barbecue and acoustic music on the ample front deck.

When the party winds down and participants head home, they won’t have to go far. The 35 handsomely trimmed bungalows of this active resort feature kitchenettes, fireplaces, flagstone patios or decks and gorgeous bay views. There’s also a swimming pool, outdoor spa, wellness center, and innumerable woodland and water-framed corners in which to meditate or from which to set off on outdoor adventures. Newlyweds can escape to the privacy of the Captain’s Quarters, 1,300 square feet of living space that includes a mahogany captain’s bed, stone fireplace, kitchen, living room, dining room, deck, and more spectacular views. Or they can say "aloha "to family and friends from the stern of a getaway speedboat with a "just married" banner fluttering in the bay breeze.
