Description
Café Santorini, an enchanting restaurant overlooking Old Town Pasadena’s One Colorado Plaza, takes its name from a small Greek island. Though there are no rocky shores at this upscale bistro, the name is nonetheless appropriate—at least in the spiritual sense. Who hasn’t dreamt of escaping with a few choice companions to a secluded Grecian isle for the uninhibited sharing of fine food, drink and song? Have your celebration here, and you’ll experience a similar joie de vivre—without getting sand in the spanakopita.
Although the restaurant and its private banquet room, the Rococo Room, are both housed in a historic brick building, each has its own entrance. The Rococo Room’s is off the boulevard, while the Cafe’s is reached down a narrow side street, reminiscent of a quaint, Old World back alley. As soon as you walk through the Cafe’s front door, the aroma of roasted garlic and rosemary leads you inside and up the stairs. You’re immediately tempted to take a seat, order a glass of wine and sip it slowly while you anticipate the meal to come. But before you get too cozy, you might want to explore the adjoining rooftop patio, dubbed by L.A. Magazine "one of the Top Five" in Southern California. Rehearsal dinners, bridal showers and intimate receptions take on an airy charm out here. Another event plus—the patio is weather-proof: a retractable awning provides shade, and if it rains, clear enclosures keep you dry while showcasing the happenings on the streets below. At night swags of twinkle lights compete with the stars for sparkle factor, and heaters keep everyone toasty.
Lavish receptions unfold in the Rococo Room. It’s hard to believe this stylish space was once a carpentry shop during the 1920s. And yet, if you look around, you’ll notice how the designers cleverly incorporated original elements in their transformation: the weathered brick wall behind the bar adds character, and the high cathedral ceiling and skylights provide space and light for the indoor trees, whose branches entwine the open wood beams. Gold and burgundy hues are carried through the sponge-painted walls, plush draperies and gilded chiavari chairs. Beaded chandeliers and gold-framed mirrors are traditionally elegant touches, but there’s also an eclectic mystique afoot, thanks to a mélange of artsy elements. A striking metal design on the lower part of the bar has abstract female forms swimming in a copper sea; above the bar, the images are echoed on the turquoise background of an avant-garde painting. In an obscure corner, a tiny stenciled shelf holds rustic pottery. The mood at the Rococo lends itself to Gypsy Kings-style music or smoky jazz, and don’t be surprised if your entire crowd takes to the portable dance floor with uncharacteristic exuberance. At some point in the festivities, perhaps during the cocktail hour, guests are irresistibly drawn to the Mezzanine, a quaint loft tucked above one side of the room. A slanted, rough-hewn ceiling has its own skylight, and a rusticated custom wall finish creates the look of an ancient villa. Crimson and ochre silk sheers add a touch of mystery, especially when pulled across the sculpted-iron railings for a private rehearsal dinner.
Whether you choose your banquet menu from the pan-Mediterranean offerings, or select another type of cuisine altogether, you can entrust your culinary desires to Cafe Santorini’s accomplished chefs. After savoring the delicious food in the sensual atmosphere, you and your guests may indeed feel as if you’d experienced an exhilarating getaway.
