Description
Completed in 2006, Meritage Resort is the first major resort built in Napa County in years. It was worth the wait. After a decade of working with local citizens and government officials, Meritage’s planners created an elegant three-story complex that’s a taste of Italy with its sienna and umber-colored buildings, fronted by a dazzling cedar loggia and a flagstone-faced porte-cochère that has to be one of California’s grandest.
Besides the resort’s sheer good looks, the thing generating the biggest buzz at its opening was the introduction of its Estate Wine Cave. A manmade marvel carved 128 feet into a hillside, it’s unlike anything ever before constructed in Wine Country. The warmly lit cave is situated beneath eight acres of vineyards and gardens, and features the world’s only underground four-star spa, along with wine barrel-lined walls, reception and dining areas, a wine tasting room and an upscale retail shop. Designed to evoke the glow and ambiance of Old World wine caves, it succeeds admirably. Two exterior staircases flank the cave’s massive wooden entrance doors and climb the hillside above. Laced with walking paths, the hilltop’s greenery provides the perfect backdrop for slow, romantic strolls. At one spot, the vines open around an oak-fringed space that serves as Meritage’s main outdoor wedding site. (If you prefer an indoor wedding, you can tie the knot at the resort’s Our Lady of the Grapes Chapel.)
Meritage has another great asset: the largest ballroom in Napa Valley (divisible into up to ten sections). It has an appealingly Italian flair, with dark wood trim against cream-colored walls, and imposing chandeliers decorated with stylized grapes. The ballroom’s simple and studied stylishness make it easy to imagine gliding onto the dance floor, swept up in good cheer and joyful music. The designers bracketed the ballroom with two nice design elements: a long loggia that admits soft northern light, and an inviting lobby that faces the resort’s inner courtyard through a bank of French doors. Both spaces, which are delightful mingling and reception areas, create a sense of expectation before you make your way into the ballroom.
If you and any of your guests decide to extend your stay at the resort, there’s no shortage of things to do. Besides playing bocce ball, swimming and relaxing in the central courtyard, there is Spa Terra in the Estate Wine Cave, a richly hued, softly lit space with private rooms (both sexes welcome), a soaking pool and a long list of indulgences: massage, facials, manicures and pedicures, body treatments and a beauty salon. Unwinding here just may be the perfect antidote to pre-ceremony jitters! And, of course, there are day trips up the valley to Napa’s world-famous wineries.
Depending on which guestrooms you reserve, views can include a sweeping northern vista of vineyards and the mountains that edge Napa Valley, a southern view of the resort’s vine-cloaked hill, or a look down onto the courtyard and Estate Cave entrance. Thirty of the rooms facing the latter area have private balconies (an enjoyable way to take in the scene). And thanks to an arrangement it has with the villas next door, Meritage can make up to 120 more rooms available for wedding parties.
The people who built Meritage wanted to fashion a one-stop, pull-out-the-stops resort where guests can feel utterly pampered. Mission accomplished.
