Description
Back in 1925, the Lodge at Union Square opened its doors to the socialites and bigwigs of San Francisco society. Commissioned by the Elks Club, the building was considered one of the richest, most fashionable downtown addresses at the time: visitors to the Elks’ third-floor headquarters were wined and dined in high style at this fraternal social organization’s many sophisticated events. Today, the Lodge carries on this legacy, hosting weddings and receptions in its airy, inviting and historic environment.
Entering through the Kensington Park Hotel, which occupies the building’s lower levels, you’re greeted by an imposing Spanish Gothic lobby. After a quick ride in the old-fashioned gilt-and-red elevator, the doors open up to the Lodge’s third floor foyer. Soaring 30-foot carved wood ceilings, decorative wooden walls, and Berber carpets make an immediate impression of antique grandeur, and glass cases at either end of the space contain relics of past members, including war medals, and other club memorabilia.
This long rectangular space opens onto the bar and lounge, where the festivities begin; here, wedding guests relax before the ceremony and have a quick drink at the circular old-fashioned bar that features an enormous mirror etched with an image of an elk. Oblong, rounded windows and smoking balconies overlook Post Street below, and a grand piano in one corner of the room can be used for mood-setting live music.
Dinners and ceremonies take place in the expansive and flexible Grand Ballroom. It usually remains closed off from the foyer until showtime; that way, the regal room’s drama is revealed in one stunning moment when the doors are opened to guests. Here’s what they’ll see: candelabra-style chandeliers hanging from the high, Beaux-Arts ceramic-tiled ceilings; a visual theme of arches in the three giant windows and the arched sections of cream-colored walls; a stately collection of mounted elk trophies; dozens of tables covered in glittering stemware, vibrant flowers and bright linens; and a spacious dance floor and stage.
When sumptuous food mixes with the historical Elks’ Lodge setting, it adds up to a first-rate venue for any special event. The convenient location also gives you and your guests direct access to the Kensington Park Hotel for on-site lodging, and Union Square’s shopping and attractions are just half a block away. For revisiting an era of elegance while staying firmly planted in modern amenities and cuisine, the Lodge at Union Square is a sure bet.
