Description
Built in 1904 and originally used for drying and packing the Valley’s apricots, peaches and prunes, the three-story Del Monte Building had been long neglected when a local developer decided to save and restore it. The process wasn’t easy. First they had to hire three trucks to carefully move the wooden structure from its location beside railroad tracks to a breezy corner across the street. Then they spent a year rebuilding it from the outside in. Their hard work has paid off, and the beautifully refurbished Historic Del Monte Building is now a terrific place for wedding receptions or corporate meetings—right in the heart of Sunnyvale’s vibrant downtown.
The main entrance is on a lovely tree-lined street. Take the wide carpeted staircase (or the elevator at the rear entrance) to the second and third floors where the fully equipped banquet facilities are located. When you step into the Grand Ballroom, everything you see is totally inviting, from the golden Wilshire chandeliers set against a stark white ceiling to the warm mahogany wainscoting. A gleaming hardwood dance floor dominates the room’s center. During the day, light filters into the room through white-framed windows and French doors. Set back into another wall is a handcrafted bar fashioned out of mahogany and beveled glass mirrors.
The third floor houses the Del Monte Room, a smaller space with a cathedral ceiling supported by five white fluted columns. At night, a dozen gold-plaited faux candle chandeliers glow overhead, while during the day natural light flows in through windows along two sides. Like the Ballroom, the Del Monte Room has a built-in bar, and it also has a spacious outdoor terrace.
When you gaze up at the Del Monte Building, fronted by tall sycamore trees and illuminated by old-fashioned lamp posts, it’s hard to believe that it was the first commercial structure erected in the city, that it led such a rugged prior existence and that it almost disappeared. By breathing new life into it, the developer not only preserved a little bit of Sunnyvale’s past, but created a delightful place to celebrate.
