Description
Few places can match the drama and mesmerizing beauty of the Mendocino coast: Waves crash spectacularly against the rugged headlands. Buttercups, lupine and other wildflowers carpet the bluffs in a blaze of springtime color. Weathered pine trees, sculpted by the wind, cling defiantly to the cliffs. Then there’s the sea itself, morphing from sapphire to turquoise to slate depending on the mood of Mother Nature. This photogenic region has not only served as the backdrop for dozens of movies, it’s also the setting of Heritage House, the North Coast’s premier inn.
Originally an 1877 farmhouse, Heritage House was purchased by a Hollywood set designer who expanded the residence and opened it as a hotel in 1949. Today the inn’s 50 rooms, suites and cottages are spread over 37 stunning acres high above the ocean. Just strolling the grounds is a sensory experience, as you take in the sweeping lawns, fragrant gardens and forested knolls—there’s even a sun-dappled duck pond. And from almost everywhere on the property you have a panoramic view of the Pacific.
Weddings here are as phenomenal as the surroundings. Among the lovely options for ceremony sites, the one that really stops brides in their tracks is the Gazebo. Standing at the end of a slender promontory, it’s bounded by sea and sky. While you exchange vows, waves splash on the rocks below and wispy clouds glide by overhead.
Continue your love affair with the great outdoors by having your reception in the fresh coastal air. Consider a cocktail party on the expanse of grass next to Heritage House’s most famous cottage, the one that starred in the 1978 film Same Time, Next Year. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the view from here is to die for. The same could be said for Deerfield Meadow, which stretches along the edge of an oceanside bluff. If you have more than 80 guests and take over the entire property, you can tent part of this meadow and celebrate in one of the state’s most breathtaking locales.
Indoor receptions take place in two adjoining rooms of the original farmhouse building. The Garden Room has a skylit ceiling with retractable canvas shades, and the Lower Dining Room opens to a sunny terrace. A third room, the Lounge, is wonderful for a relaxed cocktail reception, thanks to the blazing fire in its huge stone fireplace and abundance of wood throughout. All three spaces have walls of picture windows that afford fabulous vistas of the sea.
Meals at Heritage House are like the landscape itself: unique and ever changing. The chef uses fresh, primarily local ingredients—including some grown at the inn. And the way she combines them creates a subtle melding of flavors that makes her dishes delectable to the last bite.
Nestled among the trees, and set alongside meadows and the coast, accommodations here are designed to harmonize with the environment. Wood-burning fireplaces lend a cozy rusticity to cottages and guestrooms that are otherwise quite luxurious. The tempting list of amenities includes Dux beds, Bose stereos, complimentary mini bars, in-room soaking tubs, and even espresso machines. The pampering continues with spa treatments and the inn’s legendary hospitality. For people who want time to stop and the world to disappear, Heritage House is a sublime place to be.
