Description
Want to REALLY put your party on the map? Consider hosting it at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, an unusually provocative place for a celebration.Located in West Los Angeles’ Hancock Park and built into the side of a grassy mound, the museum is the venture of California philanthropist George C. Page. Long fascinated by the fossil discoveries in Hancock Park’s La Brea Tar Pits, Page spearheaded the construction of the museum, completed in 1977. This unique working museum houses and displays more than a million fossil bones—one of the most extensive collections and exhibits of its kind in the world.
The museum has a circular floor plan with a tropical garden atrium at the center, a pretty setting for pre-event mingling or the cocktail hour. Walking paths wind past a waterfall and small pond where colorful koi and turtle families live. Surrounding the atrium is the Main Gallery, an awe-inspiring venue for receptions. Young and old alike are dazzled by the wonders showcased around them: a colossal articulation of bones that happens to be a twelve-foot-tall Imperial Mammoth, and a mind-boggling collection of 404 dire wolf skulls are just two of the exciting displays.
Another spectacular reception option is the Upper Terrace, whose generous floor space makes it especially appropriate for large-scale entertaining. Built directly above the museum, this open-air rectangular promenade frames the atrium, providing a glorious bird’s-eye view of its lush canopy. Ceremonies on the promenade are simply exhilarating, with vows exchanged at the center-point of a half-circle balcony overlooking the garden greenery. Theatre-style seating provides your guests with not only an intimate view of the proceedings, but also panoramic vistas of Hancock Park, Museum Row and, when darkness falls, the glittering lights of West LA. A massive steel grid suspended over the Upper Terrace features a cement bas relief portraying the lives of late Ice Age mammals. At night, bright spotlights illuminating the sculpture seem to bring the animals to life—an electrifying effect! Neighboring Hancock Park can also be used for large tented fêtes. No matter where you hold your gathering at the Page, guests are free to wander throughout the museum’s Main Gallery and let their imagination run wild.
A tour of the museum’s special event spaces will open your eyes to the myriad possibilities the Page has to offer. This is the kind of place your guests really will never forget because, let’s face it, there’s nowhere else on earth quite like it.
