Description
Walk by this popular Orange County restaurant and you see high arched windows and an inviting patio—a dignified look for an upscale location. But step inside and the architectural “wow” factor just won’t quit. How do you characterize this place? Is it Art Deco? Italian? A jazz club? Elements of each of these styles blend seamlessly in one of the most visually intriguing venues we’ve seen in a long time. The eclectic interior design includes old black-and-white photos of celebrities, nightclubs, street scenes, and other locales from the 1930s, 40s and 50s; a huge painted montage of Jazz Age buildings, cars and people soars above the circular bar; and pillars are finished in harlequinesque patterns and colors like something out of medieval Florence. Crown molding and oak floors are everywhere. Dozens of delightful, sometimes tasseled, fabric sconces shaped like upside-down cones or pyramids hang in each of the restaurant’s distinctive rooms. Perhaps most delightful of all, the iron banister on the staircase that spirals up to the second floor looks like a swirling passage of musical notes.
A variety of rooms are available for private events and parties. Each has a slightly different atmosphere and furnishings, and all have walls that are a combination of light and dark, often textured, finishes. Two rooms on the first floor are ideal for rehearsal dinners and showers: the Library is lined with rich wood shelves holding objets d’art, and the comfortable Blue Room is dominated by a huge gilt-framed mirror.
Upstairs, the intimate Normandie Room, named after the fabled 1930s French ocean liner, has a built-in bar and may be opened to the larger Board Room, which can be set up to host a small wedding ceremony or reception. In the Board Room there’s a painting of people at a 1920s party dancing to a jazz band, everybody dressed to the nines. It’s so chic and festive you just want to jump in and join them.
On the opposite side of the restaurant, the second-story Grill dining area accommodates larger groups. Strategically placed big mirrors make its interior seem even more spacious, and accents like wrought-iron railings and colorful velvet curtains attract the eye. The adjoining Club Room can be reserved separately or in conjunction with the Grill, and both rooms have access to the canopied Terrace. Enclosed by brick and stucco walls, the al fresco Terrace has a bright, airy ambiance and is a favorite spot for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dancing, as well as small affairs.
One of the restaurant’s most popular “rooms” is Table 101, a curtained alcove that seats only two people—no telling how many times the question has been popped here. Now this is a restaurant that takes both events and romance seriously!
