The Claremont Resort and Spa

Description

The brilliantly white, castle-like Claremont Resort has been a Bay Area landmark since 1915, when owner Frank Havens (who won the resort’s 22 acres of land in a high-stakes game of checkers) opened the hostelry for groups of tourists attending San Francisco’s Pan-Pacific Exposition. Snug against the hills on the border between Berkeley and Oakland, the sprawling resort commands one of the best views in the Bay Area, and that—along with its old-fashioned Victorian appearance and luxurious amenities—has made it a perennial favorite with well-heeled travelers. Included among the hotel’s devotées was the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who proclaimed the Claremont "one of the few hotels in the world with warmth, character and charm." We tend to agree. After all, could the esteemed Mr. Wright be wrong?

Seated receptions take place in one of the Claremont’s many ballrooms, each with a distinct individual style. Intimate gatherings will be delighted with the lobby-level Horizon Room; its warm, subdued tones and vintage crystal chandeliers create a delicate, timeless elegance—and the panoramic view from the wall of west-facing windows encompasses both bridges and the San Francisco skyline. The adjacent Lanai Room, with a similar décor, offers one of the nicest indoor ceremony spaces we’ve seen, and comes complete with an outdoor balcony for great photo opportunities.

An added bonus is the resort’s $6-million spa facility with salon, specializing in wedding packages that include facials, hairstyling, manicures, pedicures and makeup applications—all of which will ensure that you’ll be picture perfect on your wedding day. And if you’d like to calm those pre-wedding jitters, try the spa’s herbal body treatment or the "Signature Journey." If the planning alone has you stressed, just remember that the Claremont offers a phalanx of wedding specialists and caterers who will take care of all the details for you.
