Terrace Cafe at El Rancho Inn

Description

Bordered by four towering palms, a landscaped lawn and a shimmering aqua-blue pool, this hacienda-style restaurant is an urban oasis. Although it’s right off El Camino Real at El Rancho Inn, it’s set far back from the street, removing it from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Cafe invites you in with a sundrenched terrace overlooking the pool. Terra cotta pots and planter boxes overflow with purple, pink and red flowers, while broad green umbrellas shade tables placed informally around the patio. This is a delightful spot for a small wedding ceremony or an hour of champagne and hors d’oeuvres, before going inside for your reception.

Large parties are held downstairs in the Palm Room, whose unique serpentine bar was featured in the movie The Right Stuff. Curving along one side of the room, it faces a wall of arched windows, through which you can watch people swimming in the adjacent pool. At night, when the pool is lit, the Palm Room takes on a special glow, which only enhances its slightly sultry ambiance. Add a jazz pianist (there’s a white baby grand piano at one end), or a fire in the fireplace (very cozy on chilly evenings), and you’ve got yourself quite the romantic place.

If you have a smaller celebration in mind, reserve the Veranda Room upstairs. It can be closed off from the adjacent Main Dining Room, and is especially nice if you want to have a more intimate gathering. It has crisp white walls inlaid with blue tile, wrought-iron chandeliers and a soft-hued gray-green carpet.

When you have your event at the Terrace Cafe, you get a lot of personal attention. You deal directly with the manager and the chef, who never book more than one event at a time, and are incredibly easy to work with. They customize menus and packages, do menu tastings and help with referrals. They’re also on site during your event to make sure everything goes smoothly. The contemporary cuisine focuses primarily on steak, fresh seafood and pasta, but the four-star chef loves to be creative, and really enjoys it when a client requests something special.

In addition to weddings and corporate events, the Cafe has hosted showers, retirement parties and reunions. Out-of-town guests appreciate the convenience of staying at the Inn, and the fact that the San Francisco airport is just a few minutes away. Locations on the Peninsula are hard to come by, especially with the relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices offered by the Terrace Cafe. So, stop in when you get a chance—you may be pleasantly surprised.
