Terra

Description

During the dot-com boom of the ’90s, San Francisco became a mecca for internet startups and high-tech companies. Many of them gravitated to the South of Market Area, where the collective creativity of entrepreneurs, artists and computer whizzes made it the hippest place in the city. The boom may have chilled, but SOMA is still hot. Not only is it home to the Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Gardens, SBC Park and the Moscone Convention Center, it vibrates with a diversity of businesses, restaurants, clubs…

…and galleries. One of the most intriguing of these is Terra, a gallery and event space that epitomizes the synergy of art and technology. At this urban-chic venue, just blocks from the Bay Bridge, you’re encouraged to turn your celebration into a work of art—literally. The whole place is like a big blank canvas, on which you can paint whatever vision you have in mind. When you walk in, you’re struck by the spacious, open feeling: 4,820 square feet of Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, white brick walls and support columns rising 20 feet to the ceiling, and at the end of the room, 40 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the downtown skyline. Light pours in during the day, and at night, city lights turn the wall of glass into a vast glittering tableau. There’s also a carpeted lounge area complete with leather furniture and decorative plants. Not so obvious but equally impressive are Terra’s state-of-the art Bose sound system, gallery lighting and multimedia capabilities. They can do live-feed real-time conferences, and if you’re having a destination wedding here they’re able to provide a live feed to guests who can’t attend. Also, for a fee Terra can deliver up to 108mbps of wireless bandwidth.

Owner/manager Dusty Derouen and his staff work with you to develop a theme, and ensure that your wedding is seamlessly choreographed. You’re welcome to incorporate the current exhibit’s paintings and sculptures into your event, but if you’d like something more, the folks at Terra will do almost anything to satisfy your decorative fantasies. Let’s say you want to get married next to a bubbling fountain or cascading waterfall. No problem. Or perhaps you’d like to have the columns swathed in flowers, tulle and ribbons. Consider it done. Use gel lighting to create just the right ambiance—amber for a warm glow, or perhaps blue for that sultry feeling. Spotlights come in handy to highlight favorite artworks, mementos or the cake. You can also turn Terra into your own personal gallery by exhibiting blown-up photos of the bride and groom on the walls, or projecting a slide show set to music.

Most couples tie the knot in front of the windows, but you can have your ceremony wherever the spirit moves you. As for the reception, tables are often arranged around the perimeter of the room, allowing for a sizeable dance floor in the center. One of the best things about hosting an event here is that you’re free to bring your own licensed caterer. Changing rooms for the bride and groom, as well as large well-appointed restrooms, provide an extra level of comfort. There’s also plenty of parking on street and in nearby garages, and valet service is available upon request. To accommodate out-of-town guests, who will no doubt want to stay long enough to explore SF’s museums, entertainment, and sightseeing—much of it within walking distance—Terra has partnered with the nearby Courtyard Marriott, Personality Hotels and The Mosser.

Terra is not just a unique spot for weddings; its versatility makes it an equally inspired choice for fundraisers, theme parties, fashion shows, conferences, screenings and performances. And if you’re short on imagination, don’t worry: Terra offers full production services, customized to your personality and budget. Whether you desire a quiet and elegant affair or a totally theatrical experience, this gallery has all the elements.
