Sugar Bowl Resort

Description

Sugar Bowl leads a double life. In the winter, thousands of skiers descend on its well-groomed slopes, anxious to make the most of the season’s snowy gifts. In summer, however, when the snow has melted and the crowds are gone, visitors discover a quiet, private place—one that’s custom-made for a mountain wedding, retreat or family reunion.

Built in 1938-39 at the base of Mt. Disney, the original Village Lodge is still the facility’s focal point and the site of most special events. When you host your celebration here, you have exclusive use of the entire place, including the bar, lounge, dining room, decks and creekside lawn. Interior spaces are steeped in Old Tahoe charm with a European flair. A large stone fireplace and oak Craftsman-style furniture welcome you into the lounge.

Creamy white board-and-batten walls here and in the adjacent dining room are covered with vintage prints depicting alpine and other nature scenes. And, of course, most of the rooms have a wall of windows overlooking the tree-covered Mt. Disney and an ever-changing sky.

While the lounge and dining room are often used for rehearsal dinners and indoor receptions, the Lodge’s deck is really the standout event site. This capacious wooden terrace is a sun worshiper’s dream! Facing majestic mountains, a flower-studded hillside and a clear Sierra stream, it offers plenty of space for dining, dancing and sunning. If you’d like a little protection from the sun, the deck can be partially covered with a white canopy or set up with umbrella-shaded tables. Just below the deck is a manicured lawn, bordered by tall trees and a stream. It’s a lovely spot for exchanging vows and taking photos.

Given the beauty of the setting, you’ll probably want to extend your stay, and you can. Having your event at the Village Lodge gives you the option of reserving its 27 guestrooms for your family and friends. They’re quite cozy—especially the spacious suite where the bride and groom usually spend their wedding night.

For couples who want to get married at Sugar Bowl but don’t plan to stay over, the Judah Day Lodge is available. It’s a large banquet room with a contemporary feel, thanks to light mustard walls, an earthtone carpet and beamed ceiling. Wraparound windows provide mountain views from every table, as well as plenty of natural light. Doors along the front of the room open onto a vast, herringbone-patterned brick patio. You can have your ceremony out here against a backdrop of three mountains, then move indoors for the reception. Many couples are so intoxicated by the alpine air, they opt to host their entire celebration outdoors.

Sugar Bowl’s newest venue is the Village Hall, a casually elegant chalet that’s perfect for a High Sierra wedding. Dine and dance in the wood-paneled great room beside the massive stone-and steel fireplace. Natural light streams in through two walls of glass overlooking pristine views of the surrounding forest. The exhibition-style kitchen, with its brick pizza oven, adds even more warmth to the Hall. An adjoining lounge, complete with big screen TV and pool table, serves as a separate bar area or private retreat. And during nice weather, expand your party onto the adjacent open-air deck to better appreciate the beautiful setting.

Although it’s true that weddings shine here, Sugar Bowl’s natural assets lend themselves equally well to corporate events. If you’re planning an office getaway or a high-tech brainstorming session, there’s nothing like fresh, clean air and mountain vistas to inspire a city-weary group. And no matter what time of year you come, you’ll be drawn to the old-fashioned, friendly quality of this surprisingly intimate resort.
