Why We Like This Place

Few San Francisco venues can boast as prestigious a provenance as this imaginatively re-envisioned top-of-Nob Hill hotel. Built on the lofty site selected by 19th-century railroad baron and California governor Leland Stanford as the setting for his palatial multimillion-dollar mansion, the Stanford Court, A Renaissance Hotel commands the cityscape.

The original edifice was destroyed in the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake, but part of the 30-foot basalt and granite wall that surrounded the spectacular two-acre estate was carefully restored and can be seen on the eastern side of the building. Privacy is still very much a part of this property’s charm. The keyhole street entrance opens onto a beautiful courtyard beneath a Tiffany-style dome of sunlit stained glass.

That sophisticated blend of the elegant and the urbane continues inside under another sparkling rotunda where Aurea, the hotel’s extraordinary new dining and lounge environment, offers numerous ways to relax and revitalize. Your guests can greet one another over drinks in attractive, semi-private cocktail “cubbies,” chat or nosh in intimate dining nooks, or gather pre- or post-event at one of the expansive communal tables.

From the lobby a white marble staircase descends to the ballroom level. The staircase, with its two-story waterfall of light at the top, is a stunning frame for bridal portraits. But don’t linger too long in front of the camera; other alluring settings await. The dreamy ballroom foyer has cream-colored walls set off by a glorious gold carpet that vibrates with exuberant, sun-splashed colors and shapes. Arrange cocktail tables here or use the area for champagne and passed hors d’oeuvres. White double doors open onto the California Ballroom, a great space for smaller sit-down receptions and ceremonies. The mood in this room is joyous, upbeat and uplifting: Champagne-colored walls effervesce with a soft, bubble pattern, while the balloon shapes in the carpet design create movement. Elegant white crown moldings and trim add grace and a touch of serenity.

Four more white double doors lead from the foyer to the similarly caparisoned Stanford Ballroom, where unforgettable features like twin Baccarat crystal chandeliers—that once graced the Grand Hotel in Paris—establish an exciting ambiance. Gala affairs are easily accommodated here, and the ballroom can be partitioned for more intimate gatherings. For real extravaganzas, book the entire ballroom level and let the party flow seamlessly from one enchanting room to the next.

Remarkably, the luxury doesn’t end here. Fournou’s Ovens has a selection of gorgeous ultra-private dining rooms and is a great place to extend the fun, as is the Nob Hill Room with its views from atop Nob Hill. And don’t forget the additional meeting rooms, fitness center and 393 handsome guestrooms and suites. You can definitely have your entire event here, from the rehearsal dinner to the post-wedding brunch. But if you’d like to get married in a church there are several nearby, including the famous Grace Cathedral, just two blocks from the hotel.

The Stanford Court is also a wonderful getaway for a “Bride’s” or “Groom’s” weekend before or after the wedding. There’s so much to do in San Francisco and the hotel’s stellar location makes it easy: Guests can simply hop on a cable car right outside the front door and go explore the city.
