Description
Lovely homes and the bustling Richmond and Presidio Heights neighborhoods have replaced the sand dunes that once surrounded St. John’s Presbyterian Church, but things inside the church haven’t changed. A welcoming spirit of fellowship and friendship still fills the gracefully turreted 1906 structure, and permeates all of its activities.
The cordiality begins at the bright and airy entrance, where you and your guests can gather for greetings and farewells. From here, turn left into the Narthex, the burgundy-carpeted gallery that opens onto the Sanctuary. In this intimate space, two beautiful stained-glass windows let in filtered daylight, making it an ideal location for a gift table or guest book. During the ceremony, the room can also serve as a retreat for parents with fussy children: they can mind the kids and still watch the wedding through a long row of interior windows.
Step from the Narthex into the Sanctuary, a "wow"-inspiring hall with soaring arches, gothic detailing and rows of burgundy-upholstered pews. Ten stained-glass windows and a large chandelier illuminate the darkly wooded interior, lending it a feeling of grandeur that is equal parts solemnity and warmth. Behind the pulpit and ample stage, an elegant choir loft and magnificent, newly restored Johnson organ (purchased by the church in 1870), suggest the significant role that music has always played in this institution’s ministry. A Steinway grand piano is also on hand, and the recently restored original hardwood floors further add to the room’s superior acoustics.
Around the corner from the Sanctuary, the white and cheerful Fireside Room offers a contrast to ecclesiastical grandeur. Outfitted with a mini-grand piano, burgundy wing-back chairs and conversation-style seating arranged in front of a fireplace, this spacious, light-drenched chamber has been used for tea ceremonies, small receptions and as a haven for the bride, the groom and their families. The adjacent Library, a small room with closet and full-length mirror, offers yet another level of privacy.
If needed, additional reception space is available downstairs in two large community rooms. The Fellowship Hall and the Auditorium can accommodate anything from a dinner dance to a luncheon buffet. In these two rooms, as in all the others under the church’s roof, an atmosphere of amiability and versatility governs. It’s an attitude mirrored by the staff, who imbue every event here with the same gracious care and attention that has endeared St. John’s to its community for nearly a century.
