South Coast Winery Resort and Spa

Description

This is an impressive site: an all-in-one resort, spa, destination restaurant and winery in the heart of an up-and-coming wine region.

Surrounded by extensive vineyards in the rolling mountain-ringed country east of Temecula, South Coast is already a landmark—and it’s easy to see why. The winery’s bell tower-capped main building is a distinctive stucco structure with colorful steeply pitched roofs of red tile and green metal. Lengthy arbors, separated by plush lawns, run along the building’s inner and outer walkways. The arbors, fashioned from rugged pine timbers and hand-finished to reveal their knotty splendor, are festooned with climbing roses, wisteria and bougainvillea. Hundreds of flowerpots dangle from the walkway columns, and blossoms seem to tumble down beside every exterior stairway.

The first of the two most popular wedding sites here is a simple lawn next to a vineyard, lined by hedges and delicate wrought-iron lampposts. Its centerpiece is a rough-hewn arbor that frames a view of Palomar Mountain, an iconic landmark in this part of the state. Brides who wed here late in the day love the effect when sunset’s golden light bathes them and the neighboring mountainsides, creating an indelible memory.

The other site is a grand space at the heart of the resort: a courtyard, a four-level terrace and a lawn at the base of a dramatic staircase that emerges from under a high arch in the bell tower. Many brides make their entrance by stepping out into the sunlight at the top of the stairs, then descending regally to the courtyard. Other imposing entrances include arriving by horse-drawn carriage into the courtyard, or stepping out of a limousine next to the terrace and walking down its steps to the courtyard. Whichever way you enter it, the courtyard becomes a wonderful gathering place. Although this is a big space when empty, once happy celebrants fill it for an event, it immediately transforms into an intimate setting.

Next to the courtyard, there’s a working barrel room with umber walls and a white ceiling. Some wedding parties hold their receptions here, followed by dancing in the beautiful glow produced by hundreds of flickering votive candles placed atop barrels of slowly aging wine. For larger or more formal receptions, South Coast’s banquet room pleases with its rustic elegance, created by a cathedral ceiling soaring above pine trusses.

If you’d like to have a rehearsal dinner on site, the restaurant is a superb place to host it. Its lavish use of oak for the rafters, which vault over bold fir trusses, makes for one of the most impressive interiors we’ve seen in the Temecula region. The effect is enhanced with umber-colored walls, windows on three sides and exquisite handset stonework along the east wall.

South Coast is a full-spectrum venue that offers a breadth of services and amenities, along with plenty of style. You could conceivably have your rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony, reception and honeymoon here, as well as lodge your guests. And the fact that you’d be doing all this in a place that’s created quite a stir among wine aficionados only gives your celebration even more cachet.
