Description
Located at the far west end of Marina del Rey’s South Bay boardwalk, Shanghai Red’s offers not only fine California cuisine (specializing in seafood), but also an intriguing blend of Polynesian, Victorian and contemporary architecture.
Named after a famous 1940s Navy and Marine Bar, Shanghai Red’s first opened its doors in the early 80s, replacing the nautical Polynesian restaurant known as "Pieces of Eight." Vestiges of the former restaurant still remain however, and are evident in the walkway leading to Shanghai Red’s entrance. Here one passes through lush green gardens filled with palms, willows, hibiscus, alyssum and impatiens. A series of brick-lined footbridges span mysterious dark ponds teeming with plump koi and water lilies. Overhead, the thatched roof supported by stout wood beams and timbers strikes an especially South Seas note.
Step into the restaurant’s lobby and you’ll detect a subtle character shift. Distinguished by polished hardwood floors and furnished with antiques, comfy, old-fashioned divans and upholstered chairs, the lobby adopts a Victorian motif which is echoed throughout the restaurant’s interior.
Shanghai Red’s offers three exceptional banquet rooms in addition to a patio area overlooking the harbor. If your occasion calls for a fantastic view of boats plying the harbor waters, then your best bet is the Marina Room. With ribbon windows on three sides, this room is perfect for luncheons or dinners. Cross over to the opposite end of the restaurant and you’ll encounter the South Bay Room overlooking both the harbor and the South Bay Patio. Featuring wall-to-wall forest green carpeting, graceful chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows, this room comfortably seats a crowd. Lastly, there’s the Garden Room, whose green walls and contrasting rich oak wainscoting create a tranquil space mirroring the gardens outside its big picture windows.
For al fresco celebrations, Shanghai Red’s offers the South Bay Patio. Quintessentially West Coast in flavor, and shaded by big green-and-white canvas umbrellas, this breezy brick terrace provides an up-close and personal view of the Marina del Rey harbor. Should you favor tying the knot seaside, Shanghai Red’s can easily accommodate you by arranging for chapel-style seating along the length of the South Bay Patio. Brides then promenade down a center aisle to a lovely white gazebo at the western end. For a more intimate outdoor ceremony, consider the Marina Patio adjacent to the Marina Room or the cozy, brick-lined Garden Patio, off to the side of the front entrance. Brightened by bougainvillea and geraniums, and screened by tall trees laced with twinkle lights, this space—especially pretty at dusk—qualifies as a little bit of Eden.
Pervading the entire tableau is the warm hospitality of Shanghai Red’s staff. They’ve devoted themselves to the business of creating special events—it’s more than a business, it’s a genuine pleasure.
