Description
When Angelo and Kathryn Servino decided to move their restaurant to a larger location, they were faced with a challenge: how to maintain the friendly "family" atmosphere that had made their old restaurant a favorite of Tiburon natives for over twenty years and run a large, upscale operation that would attract out-of-town business. Well, we don’t know the Servinos’ exact formula, but they seem to have pulled it off. It was a cold, rainy November day when we visited Servino Ristorante, but as soon as we stepped inside, it was as if the sun had suddenly broken through the clouds, enveloping us in its benevolent rays. The earth-toned décor, crackling fireplace and delicious aromas issuing from the exhibition kitchen made us feel as though we were in a friend’s living room rather than a commercial establishment. And judging from the number of customers we saw who seemed to know the staff by name, the locals must feel the same way.
Both the restaurant and the event facilities are as tastefully appointed as any we’ve ever seen, and are appropriate for intimate birthdays, black-tie galas or business functions. The primary event space, the Bellavista Room, is upstairs, and features its own wet bar and private waterfront deck. A versatile color scheme of hand-stippled pale gold walls, russet booths and sienna brown carpeting makes the room seem cozy in winter or refreshing in summer, especially with the French doors open to catch the sea breezes. The ceiling has light wooden beams and unusual Y-shaped supports, and soft lighting is provided by clever fixtures resembling upside-down parchment parasols, sconces with parchment shades, and discreet track lights. Tables and blond wood chairs occupy the central carpeted area, and an L-shaped dance floor of gleaming hardwood runs along two sides of the room. In addition to a wall of French doors, there are plenty of large windows framing spectacular views of Angel Island and the San Francisco skyline. The deck can be tented if rain is threatening, and heat lamps mean it can be enjoyed year-round.
Though the main downstairs dining room is not rented out for special events (unless you want to "buy out" the entire restaurant), semi-private dining is available for smaller groups. Similar in décor to the upstairs facility, with booths and hand-painted walls, the dining room also has an exhibition kitchen, an attractive bar overlooking Main Street, a cozy cocktail area with fireplace, a waterfront deck, and a mural of Da Vinci sketches. Be sure to stop on the stairs and admire the larger-than-life sculpture hanging from the wall—a voluptuous, angelic figure wrapped in swirling draperies, stretching her hand out as if to help you up (or down) the stairs.
The food has always been the main "star" of the restaurant. Chef-owner Angelo Servino has created an extensive menu inspired by classical Italian cooking, and over the years some of his dishes have become local favorites. An extra plus is that for special events, Angelo will be happy to custom design a menu that reflects your own individual tastes. Combine this with the in-house event coordinator’s talent for making your vaguest plans a beautiful reality, and you’ve got the makings of a smashing event. Best of all, whether you’ve lived in Tiburon all your life, or this is your first visit, the Servino family will give you a welcome guaranteed to warm you all the way down to your toes—no matter what the weather!
