Description
For many Californians, their first introduction to Pismo Beach involved digging in the tidal sand for the famous Pismo Clams. Though seldom successful, "clam digging" was always an enjoyable pastime spent in the bracing sea air. Yet there’s much more to Pismo, including a colorful past. In its early days, the coastal village was notorious for its brothels, saloons, and bootleggers. Eventually more wholesome entertainments took over, and today families flock to this old-fashioned beach town for fun in the sun; sometimes Pismo becomes "base camp" for Central Coast day-trips, like a visit to Hearst Castle or wine tasting.
However, many folks are plenty satisfied to kick back and discover Pismo’s own natural attributes. Besides the beach, you’ll also discover one of the finest coastal dunes in California, stretching in wave-like crests parallel to the water’s edge. This mini-eco system includes an estuary, where rare shorebirds take refuge among wildflowers and fragile grasses. For some, the beauty and solitude of the dunes possess a spiritual quality, and during the ’40s, a group of mystics claimed to be drawn to the Dunes’ "creative force."
Whatever draws you to Pismo, the best place to stay is the SeaVenture Resort, a three-story, event-friendly hotel that’s right on the sand—and next to the dunes and estuary. (In fact, many times a local Mama Duck has wandered into SeaVenture’s lobby accompanied by her adorably fuzzy brood!) For couples envisioning a romantic beach wedding, this boutique hostelry makes it happen—and oh so nicely. SeaVenture’s banquet manager personally supervises the details of your big day, so that when it’s time to speak your vows everything is in place and the scene is set: you’re standing with your toes sinking into the powder-soft sand, accompanied by the rhythmic surf, soaring gulls, and glorious setting sun.
The festivities continue just steps away in SeaVenture’s phenomenal top-floor restaurant. A lively aquarium greets guests in the foyer, and the décor is breezy and contemporary: A rich sea-green color scheme is accented with white plantation shutters, framed impressionistic shore scenes, and rich marble floors and trim. A row of windows in the main dining room captures the ocean panorama: sailboats glide in the swells, body-surfers ply the breakers, and water birds dive in graceful arcs over the shoreline.
A pair of banquet rooms, one on either side of the dining room, look out to their own terraces, terrific spots to enjoy champagne and appetizers while soaking up the beachy ambiance. Follow up with a reception in one of the banquet rooms or throughout the entire restaurant, depending on the size of your group. A huge circular marble-topped bar at the center of the restaurant is perfect for mingling, and a separate Fireplace Room accommodates the entertainment.
Perhaps the best reason to celebrate at SeaVenture is the delicious, high-quality cuisine—think gourmet rather than ordinary. (After sampling the dishes ourselves one evening, we couldn’t resist returning the next night for more!)
Overnight guests relax in cozy accommodations, most with Jacuzzis on private balconies; in the morning a basket of goodies is delivered to their door. The newlyweds can reserve the Beach House, a three-bedroom oceanfront bungalow. View-filled picture windows, a fireplace, and a steaming hot tub all promise dreamy, star-filled nights and lazy breakfasts in bed Chances are you’ll want to make a visit to Pismo’s SeaVenture Resort an annual tradition!
