Sea Ranch Lodge

Description

In the early morning, a light mist veils the coast. Weathered redwood buildings float into view, hugged by deep green stands of cypress trees. Far below, the sea crashes against the rocks, and the rugged, serpentine coastline fades away into the fog. You blink, half expecting that when you open your eyes it will all disappear. But it doesn’t. And you begin to understand why so many people consider The Sea Ranch a magical place.

Perched high on a bluff, the Sea Ranch Lodge is part of a small community of individualists who cherish the soothing solitude of this North Coast haven. And for those who don’t have the luxury of living here permanently, the Lodge provides a temporary getaway. It’s also a coveted site for a wedding.

Getting married here is an exhilarating experience. Outdoor ceremonies take place on a site adjacent to a historical, circa 1890s Barn overlooking the sculpted cliffs and frothy shoreline that extends for miles in both directions. The short path down from the Lodge that brings you here cuts through a meadow of golden grass, bordered by wildflowers in purple, yellow and white. As you walk towards the point, you hear the surf pounding, and smell the ocean’s scent in the air. For a spiritual touch as you say your vows, have a bagpiper or flutist play a haunting melody.

The Barn’s weatherworn charm makes it an unusual and enchanting site for a reception. Narrow beams of sunlight filter through the cracks between ceiling and wall planks, suffusing the interior with a lambent glow. The floor is covered with straw, and the rafters can be draped with beautiful fabric or entwined with flowers to create a festive ambiance. After sunset, hundreds of small globe lights strung across the rustic beams heighten the romance.

If you’d rather have your celebration inside the Lodge, the facility has three interconnecting rooms, all with redwood walls and ocean views. The Fireside Room is a cozy space for a small reception, elopement, renewal of vows, rehearsal dinner or dancing. A large river rock fireplace dominates one wall, while art done by local artists covers the others. A huge picture window and a skylight let in natural light. Larger receptions are held in the Dining Room, whose façade of windows overlooks the bluff and sea. The adjacent Solarium is an intimate atrium used for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and mingling. Completely enclosed by glass, this bright space affords a floor-to-ceiling view of the meadows, ocean and sky.

The beauty of The Sea Ranch, aside from its abundant natural attributes, is that you and your guests can stay here long enough to really relax and enjoy it. Guestrooms are uncluttered and comfortable; all but one have ocean views, most have fireplaces, and only a couple have televisions. The Bridal Suite has an amazing ocean view, a fireplace plus a private courtyard with its own hot tub. Diversions include exploring the beaches, hiking along miles of trails, kayaking and playing golf on The Sea Ranch’s links style course. The Dining Room serves all meals and, of course, the staff here is very accommodating of your needs.

Not getting married? Don’t let that stop you from coming to the Sea Ranch Lodge. The setting is just as uplifting for a romantic weekend, corporate retreat, or family reunion. Let’s face it, when the earth was created, some places ended up much more enchanting than others. This is one of them.
