Savannah at the Beach

Description

Savannah at the Beach occupies the first floor of an impressive plantation-style building in one of Orange County’s prime beachfront locations, nestled beside a grove of soaring palms and just steps from Huntington Pier. The world-famous 1,800-foot pier, a fanciful concrete confection that’s topped by a futuristic lifeguard station, is a magnet for beach strollers. The Pacific is a mere 100 yards away from the restaurant, across a wide stretch of sand dotted with volleyball nets.

As the only restaurant with an oceanfront patio for miles and miles in either direction, Savannah at the Beach has no problem attracting couples looking for a reception site with a great beach vibe. But the food here is also part of the appeal. The kitchen has a solid local reputation as a purveyor of top-quality surf and turf (and is famous for its “Mango Martinis” and other tropical drinks), and will happily customize its menus to suit almost any taste. As a result, Savannah at the Beach is not only popular for wedding receptions, it also hosts scores of rehearsal dinners, brunches and other wedding-related occasions throughout the year. Guests staying at the nearby Hilton and Hyatt hotels just across Pacific Coast Highway particularly appreciate its easy accessibility. And, since Savannah at the Beach is a restaurant, you’ll only pay for food and beverage—there’s no rental fee or nickel and diming for items likes plates and silverware.

Several areas are available for receptions, including two outdoor patios, a sunroom that feels like an indoor patio and the entire interior. You can pick any combination of spaces you’d like to reserve. On the main patio’s beach-facing west side, succulent plants, palms and a low papaya-colored wall create a buffer between it and a bustling boardwalk. Palapas—big palm-thatched “umbrellas”—wicker chairs, a large round fire pit and flowerpots throughout add other tropical touches that are popular with guests. The space is also easily set up for a DJ or band. On Savannah’s south side, palms and birds of paradise edge a smaller patio, which is the restaurant’s most private space. Set well back from the boardwalk, it can be made even more secluded with portable trellises.

Savannah at the Beach’s inviting interior features recycled and polished woods. Light sconces, some filigreed with iron and others shaped like brilliant multi-colored cones, seduce the eye. Terracotta tiles and rich carpeting complement the two-level dining room and bar’s delicious color scheme of warm sepia, cherry, chocolate and caramel. Diners also enjoy a splendid view to the patio and beach, thanks to the solid wall of windows and doors running along the restaurant’s west side.

Several years ago Huntington Beach proudly proclaimed itself “Surf City USA,” a name that has helped it draw world-class surfing and volleyball competitions to the beach right in front of the restaurant. With its exciting location, great tropical-beach buzz and feel, accommodating event staff and savvy kitchen, this is one festive place to go before, on or after your wedding day.
