Sandacre Estate

Description

One of the most talked-about celebrity romances of Hollywood’s Golden Age was that of Marilyn Monroe and baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. Where did the couple go when they wanted to escape the glare of the spotlight? Palm Springs’ fabled Movie Colony. Their rumored hideaway? Sandacre Estate. Built in 1929, the Spanish-style manor provides privacy, calm and understated luxury. Marilyn and Joe’s alleged desert refuge is still one of the grande dames of the Movie Colony, and following a lavish restoration it’s available for exclusive destination events.

Towering green hedges form a verdant wall alongside huge remote-controlled wooden gates that open to the tranquil world of Sandacre. A landscaped driveway leads to a circular motor court reminiscent of an Old World piazza: visitors are greeted by a flowing fountain in a petite garden of white-tipped irises. The estate’s attractive Mediterranean-style façade is embellished with a dash of decorative tile and luxuriant foliage, which softens its imposing grandeur. Wood trim, sand-colored walls and terracotta roof tiles ensure that Sandacre harmonizes with its desert milieu. In the background the majestic peaks of the San Jacinto mountains form a rugged silhouette above leafy treetops. The two-story home also features an octagonal Tower Room with a Juliet balcony, where Marilyn was famously photographed wearing a white terrycloth robe. Opposite the fountain a trio of arched wooden doorways looks like something out of a European castle, while off to the side a tennis court is a distinctly modern element.

Garden paths meander around the home to a swimming pool ringed with fan palms and blooming hibiscus. A sweep of lawn connects the pool area to a stone terrace shaded by a loggia, and replete with a brick-trimmed barbecue and fireplace. While cozy gatherings are delightful either poolside or fireside, more elaborate festivities are held on the Great Lawn, adjacent to the tennis court. Embraced by sweet-blossomed grapefruit trees, olive saplings and a trio of palms, the Great Lawn is perfectly lovely in its bucolic simplicity, or imaginatively styled for a themed event. Brides love to make a fairytale entrance through the lofty front gates, sometimes via horse-drawn carriage or a classic Rolls Royce. Since the entire place is theirs for the weekend, couples arrange their wedding around the grounds to suit themselves—an intimate ceremony by the fountain, followed by cocktails in the back yard and a reception on the Great Lawn is just one scenario.

The best thing about celebrations at Sandacre, however, is staying the weekend. Though it sleeps eight, newlyweds may want to revel in Sandacre’s magic all by themselves. A plank-and-iron entryway opens to the light-filled Great Room, with a vaulted wood-beam ceiling and curving staircase. Soothing hues of cream, taupe and mocha wrap you in a feeling of hospitable warmth, and the tasteful décor speaks of quality and comfort. A gourmet kitchen, plasma TV and fine imported linens are a few of Sandacre’s deluxe amenities. The Master Suite sets the stage for romance, with a canopy bed that looks out to the garden, a fireplace, and a claw-foot tub in the en suite bath.

Brought to you by Laurie Lund of Events Unlimited, a professional wedding and event coordinator, Sandacre offers the relaxed seclusion of a private villa and a chance to continue the estate’s romantic legacy.
