San Moritz Lodge

Description

If you’d like to have an outdoor wedding but dread holding it in the Inland Empire’s sometimes soaring heat, consider what a difference 3,500 extra feet of elevation can make. A 30-minute trip up Rim of the World Drive—one of the most scenic roads in the United States—will bring you to Lake Gregory and its cool green cedar and pine forest. At 4,700 feet, its temperature is often fifteen degrees cooler than the lowlands. There, tucked away at lakeside, you’ll find the San Moritz Lodge, a forest-rimmed chalet whose enormous wooden columns make it look like a great national park lodge.

Ceremonies at San Moritz most often take place on the “Ceremony Lawn” in front of the Lodge. The lawn, slightly sloping, has a fine line of view toward Lake Gregory and is edged by tall conifers, including an absolutely perfectly formed cedar that soars 125 feet.

Indoors, there are two ceremony/reception sites. The big, kitchen-equipped Lakeside Room has two parallel rows of great wooden pillars, supporting a cathedral ceiling that rises 35 feet. Its flagstone-faced fireplace climbs dramatically, flanked by an enormous pile of firewood. A bank of fifteen-foot-high windows runs along its patio side, affording an expansive outdoor view. The cozier Fireside Room has a bar and, of course, a fireplace. Guests often take advantage of San Moritz’s fireplaces and build blazes in winter. For a small fee, the San Moritz staff will set up and maintain a fire during your festivities.

A very popular pre- or post-ceremony gathering site for cocktails is on the shaded patio outside the Lakeside Room. Sipping and socializing beneath its massive wooden colonnade makes you feel you’re in the Tetons or the Sierra.

San Moritz is located in a public park, yet is isolated enough to give people a sense of real privacy. And when you factor in the Lodge’s easy-going approach to decoration, you can see why the task of decorating the Lodge often morphs into a light-hearted pre-wedding party. Basically, San Moritz provides tables and chairs, and the rest is up to you. Or, if you’d like a little assistance, the Lodge will happily provide a list of approved vendors—including caterers, bakers and florists—who know the facility and have worked events here.

Someone from the Lodge is on site the day of your wedding to help out with any facility needs, so there’s no need to worry about lighting or where things are. There’s flexibility, too, on how much space you can reserve—rent San Moritz’ rooms individually or take over the entire Lodge.

Management here says that “their” brides develop a sense of ownership about San Moritz. Well, other senses get indulged, too: there’s nothing quite like the heady look and scent of polished old timbers and big trees beside a cool mountain lake.
