Description
Two of the most notable buildings in downtown San Jose stand side by side, facing a grand plaza with a circle of palms at its center. One is from the 19th century, the other from the 20th, yet joined together they make up the San Jose Museum of Art, an intriguing place for both art and scintillating special events.
On the left is the historic wing, built in 1892 from rough-hewn sandstone. Originally the city’s Post Office and then its Main Library, it displays the graceful lines of a Richardson Romanesque structure. To the right is the new wing, constructed in 1991. Modern and sophisticated, this 45,000-square-foot addition showcases an inspired use of natural sandstone, precast concrete, glass and aluminum. The combination of these stylistic contrasts offers party-planners several exciting event spaces to choose from.
Walk up the steps and through the museum’s skylit entrance and you’ll find yourself in the Atrium, the primary site for special events. “Dramatic” is the word that comes to mind as you take in this open, airy space: The soaring 30-foot ceiling is hung with glass chandeliers by famed artist Dale Chihuly; gleaming gray terrazzo floors meet the rough stone of the exposed wall where the two wings are joined; and floor-to-ceiling windows reveal an outdoor sculpture court. A second-story balcony is an excellent spot for a string quartet, jazz trio or wedding ceremony. Holiday parties, corporate galas, weddings and receptions—all have been held in this impressive setting.
The Atrium opens to the historic wing, which houses a 2,000-square-foot event space. With its tall arched windows, hardwood floors and crisp white walls, this versatile room works well for a party with dinner and dancing, or a meeting in a dynamic atmosphere.
The museum’s collection of art—both contemporary and historical—is displayed throughout many ever-changing galleries. They’re all open for viewing, but if you’d like a private docent tour for your guests just ask—it will be provided at no charge.
Whether you’re planning an out-of-the-ordinary wedding or a marketing presentation, the San Jose Museum of Art provides a striking backdrop. There simply is nowhere else in the South Bay where you can simultaneously have a celebration and immerse yourself in today’s newest painting, sculpture, photography and other forms of contemporary art.
